Roughly to the arrow. As long as you leave some plastic over the front, it should be fine. I do this all the time.

You know, my first reaction was " You want to do what???" Then GRJ came up with an answer not just an answer ,but an exact answer, and I was like, "Wow, didn't know you could do that?" And that is what makes this such a great forum!
When I'm using the flickering LED's for a flickering firebox effect, I use four flickering LED's, red, orange, and yellow. I grind the faces off so that the beam is diffused from the LED. Here's a sample of my flickering firebox modules. I've used the same technique for number boards. I also put a plain white piece of paper in front to further spread the light.
