Are you confident that this engine has the original Protosound 2.0 / 5 volt circuit boards in it?  If so, great.  If purchased used and this can't be verified, we'll need more information.

It looks like the available Star 16 ohm replacement option available through this MTH Parts Protosound 2.0/ 5-volt Steam search is the 50mm diameter.

BF0000033SPEAKER / 16 OHM 3W / 50mm DIAM. / REPLACES STAR AND ASAHI38$18.00/ea

Among the options available from MTH, this 3Watt speaker's increased power handling ability would be my choice.

Edit: I started this reply before Sid posted his.

I'm only going by the dimensions and electrical specs. provided. The one recommended by Sid has the same specs as the original. The 3 W replacement offered by MTH with 50% additional power handling capability may avoid future issues with possibly overdriving/ overheating the replacement speaker, assuming there are no issues with the audio amplifier.

As to whether the one recommended by Sid or the one sold by MTH parts would sound better, I don't know.  From a purely theoretical electrical perspective, either one should work.

@Sid's Trains do you have any recommendations about which sounds better?

The one that I recommend is a very nice speaker. I have been using these for a long time now. Replaced over 50 speakers with these. The pack a lot of punch and get the job done well. They fit the same footprint, original specs, and overall design of the MTH speakers. They are also a little cheaper than the MTH ones.

3 Watts is not how much power the speaker consumes.  3 watts is how much power it can handle before the speaker's voice coil melts.  The power the speaker uses from the audio amp is directly related to the 16 Ohm speaker impedance and amp's output voltage.

The audio amp's output power is limited by it's internal circuitry, so since the original speaker was rated for 2 watts, the 3 watt 16 Ohm speaker can handle the audio amp's output and will not cause it to draw more power.

If it fits, then it will work fine electrically.

So I got the speaker @GGG recommended. It doesn't fit either. The magnet is too wide. The magnet on the original speaker was around 22mm wide. Which speaker does MTH have or from a third party will work?

I think that was mentioned some time back...

Well, the height isn't an issue, but the diameter of the magnet is going to be a problem it looks like.

Alright. I'll give it a go.

Where did you get the speaker?  That is the Custiak, I think BF-0000031; only .25W.  The BF-33 probably will not work either from a magnet size, depending on which version you get.  MTH replaced it with a different form type when the original went obsolete.  I have the original replacement type you need.  G

I ordered the speaker direct from mth. Send me an email. I'll buy the one you have.

So, I checked the MTH part site and they don't have the correct speaker.  This is one of those case where they are providing a substitute that is not a direct replacement.  Same goes with the BF-34 versus the 43 4 ohm.  The form is different and the 34 now obsolete because of cost (big magnet) fit in some engines because of the low-profile outer diameter, and the BF-43 can't because it has a high outer diameter height.  Vice vesa also because the 43 small magnet can fit through some chassis holes, that the BF-34 doesn't.  Most application it doesn't matter.  But in some it does.  Will drop in mail today.  G
