Hello,

I recently purchased an MTH Premier N&W J and have found that it squeaks/chrips when moving forward above 20smph. Below 20smph or running in reverse, the squeak is inaudible.

Here is a video highlighting the issue:

I have performed the following troubleshooting steps so far to no avail:

  • Oiled siderod pivot points (per MTH manual)
  • Oiled axle points (per MTH manual)
  • Greased gears (per MTH manual)
  • Oiled pickup rollers

I'm wondering if it's the metal leafs on the trailing truck or tender axles but the manual does not mention lubricating these areas. I tried applying a small bit of light oil there nonetheless to see if that helped, however it did not. Should I try grease next? Does it need to be conductive grease if I'm running 3-rail?

Thanks for the help!

Too much background noise from fastrack to hear any chirp in that video,.....good rule of thumb, if it’s a moving part, lubricate it,....if you haven’t oiled the axles on the tender and the lead and trailing trucks of the locomotive, start there. Although conductive oil is a good idea for pick up rollers, and axles that transmit from common outside rail, it’s not going to hurt a thing to use a tiny drop of  light weight oil on those moving parts,.....at least so you can diagnose your chirp,....I still don’t own a bottle of conductive oil, and never had an issue,....biggest thing to remember, if it moves, lube it,...

It may be too obvious, but I had an MTH Premier Hudson with a squeak that I couldn't locate.  Finally turned off the sound and Voila it disappeared.  If nothing else eliminates it, give it a try.  Good Luck!

True. MTH has an exhaust chuff sound recording from a real steam locomotive with a broken valve ring, which actually produces a "squeak/chirp" every 4th exhaust. Although it is prototypical, it will drive many modelers NUTS.
