Hi Fellas,

Several years ago I acquired this diesel at a very reasonable price w/ DCC and sound already installed.  I’m not very knowledgeable about Amtrak and am looking for suggestions to assemble a reasonably correct Amtrak train based on the upcoming GGD cars.  I’ve reviewed so many pictures of Amtrak consists that I’m starting to believe that “Anything goes”, nevertheless I’d like to put together a “Pure” consist even if it only lasted a short time.

That paint scheme was the as-delivered scheme for the Genesis series locomotives.  The P40 started arriving in 1992 and the P42 in 1996 as I recall.  The best cars for this era that will be coming out from GGD would be the Amfleet cars in Phase III.  I just talked with Scott and the Slumbercoach will be released in Phase III paint as well, but they only ran until 1996.  Currently there are not any other upcoming Amtrak car releases from GGD.  That could change though.  There are some ideas kicking around.

I think you nailed it with "almost anything goes". I ride Metrolink to work (or I should say "rode" until they had me working from home) and at LA Union Passenger Terminal there are several Amtrak trains that run in and out of there. Most of the P42's still in use have been repainted to the "wave" scheme, but I did see one with stripes pulling the San Diegan a few months ago.

Thanks for your input.  Yes, Phase III is the livery I’d choose as it would match the locomotive.  The Slumbercoach may work but I’m still researching a number of trains and their respective equipment.  

This website,  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Amtrak_routes  has provided some good info.  The “Pennsylvanian” and “Palmetto” are two possibilities that could work.  As for the GGD cars, I’m hoping Scott will continue using Ball Bearings as it would make a very noticeable difference for a single locomotive pulling 6-8 cars.  Since the Amtrak coaches have trucks that are braced from the inside, I’m hoping BB’s can still be used.

That's a very beautiful locomotive, and since it's 2-rail, I'm guessing that's an Overland model. The Budd Hi-Levels would seem to fit the era too, but I know those are older GGD models that you would have to find second-hand ATM, and I'm sure they are very, very difficult to find.

Thanks and yes, it is an OMI product.  Also, it has a NCE/Tsunami decoder setup that someone else installed which works really well.  All dressed up and no train to pull, that needs to change!

It largely depends on what you're looking to model or just want a matching train to run with it.  The Amfleet I cars should be in the Phase III scheme.  Atlas also has done the Horizon Cars in Phase III also.  Both of these would be suitable and can be intermixed.  Typically a consist for that era might be 3-4 coaches and a lounge.
