Hoping someone can assist me. Just got a new engine, B&O Legacy 2-8-8-2 (#7150). SKU: 2131140. Thought I was getting it new in the box, my Dad got it from a guy at a train show. He had a couple of them, still has one listed on the bay.

After trying to program it, reset it, use it in conventional or Bluetooth, finally realized that the Engine is not powering up. The tender does. Rear LEDs, sounds, responds to the bell and whistle buttons from the transformer. But the engine itself, the headlight, classification lights, cab lights... nothing. Also not seeing it in the Lionchief app. Assuming its actually new, if I open it up what should I look for?

Don't open it up. Lionel may not warranty it if you open the engine.

I'm the first person to void the warranty and open it (normally because I replace the Canon motor with a real Pittman) but again, in these situations it needs to go back to Lionel. Even the dealer- the new policy is Lionel handles all warranty.

EDIT, flipside is, that is a 21 cataloged engine. Being 2023, well you might be in that really bad space to be in- not warranted by Lionel, but recent modern- so repair- Lionel doesn't do out of warranty servicing, so then it's an even bigger problem.

So I would be in contact with that dealer ASAP.

Does it have a warranty if it wasn't purchased from a dealer? I'm not sure if its still under warranty anyway, although they are still making them so maybe it is.

Also, just to cover all bases. You implied you tested multiple ways, straight conventional- base completely unplugged, hoping for bluetooth signal- bluetooth switch on.

Did you check the engine by itself for current draw (one of the reasons I like using the Z4000 transformer). I would expect to see minor but some current draw on power up (engine by itself- no tender to skew the results since the tender draws it's own power from pickups). If absolutely no current draw- either the rollers or wheels or something is not connected to power input to the board, or the board is so damaged it's open circuit at this point.

But again, really now, you are in this with the dealer, and I would follow any instructions or advice they had for testing and proving it was bad- depending on how they want to handle the situation.

Yeah, I checked for diagrams on the website and the only document they have is the instruction manual.

I didn't get it from a dealer. Just a guy selling trains at a train show. He may have purchased from a dealer, he said he got 3 of them for a good price. I'll check with him tomorrow. I didn't check for current draw. I have a ZW-C but I can use a multi meter.

It's rather risky buying high dollar train items from "a guy at a train show".

Unless they represent a reputable dealer.You may have little recourse .

Good luck, in the outside chance you have contact info for the seller and they are willing to help.

Warranty is only honored when purchased from an authorized dealer.

There are folks on the forum that "may" be able to repair it, but the parts are not yet available.

Just reading your first post you mentioned the seller has another locomotive like yours for sale on the eBay? That’s a way to contact the fellow that sold the engine to your dad, try to get in touch with him. He may have bought it new from a dealer and could help you with warranty. I’m hoping you can get in touch with him.  
Now, in looking at your profile on the OGR Forum, you have not listed where you reside. Possibly there may be a dealer in your area. I think everyone should fill out the forum questionnaire as it helps us help those folks.
Worst case scenario, get in touch with a Legacy Repair Station nearest you. Triple package the engine for safe shipping. Use UPS or FedEx….

Jces12, if you are new to this hobby please be aware that a high dollar legacy engine that is offered as new and $500.00 cheaper than a reputable dealer is a sign that something is not right. I certainly hope you are able to get in touch with the guy you bought it from and have a positive outcome. If not there’s plenty of help available here on the forum. Keep us posted.

I contacted him and he said it worked when he sold it. Think I'm on my own, but maybe its just something loose inside. I'm actually a half hour from Mario's Trains but they aren't a service center. Looks like Sidetrack is the closest repair center. But I could also drive to several of the ones in PA with the side benefit of checking out a new hobby shop.

Thank you for showing your location, very helpful, also, being that you contacted the seller, we’re you able to find out if he was the first buyer of your locomotive, or even who he possibly bought it from, or any good information?  I would get with Lionel and see who their closest Legacy Repair station is…. When I sell items at local train shows, TCA, LCCA, I always give my phone number and invite them to my home to run trains.
I have purchased many of my pre-owned trains here on the OGR Forum, and most of the time all was great, but some sellers are not reliable. I must say Gunrunner John has bailed me out many times….
Being that we know you location some of the Forum members could guide you to a service station. Good luck, and hopefully there will be some dealer in driving distance that can fix your issues. Thanks for sharing your locality.
