The Standard Gauge 'light bulb' has gone on.

Do the cars say MTH Lines or Ives Lines. MTH made then both ways.

Those cars as originals with a 385 E was my first STG set. I bought it from a friend who received it for Christmas in 1936.

Yeah, the smell is awesome. The sound? I like the traditional (no proto) kind. Again, I come from the highly-detailed 3RS world, but have come to know there is something about the ambient sound that the actual locomotive and cars create themselves. It's Zen. Digital can never recreate that. I love the originals but the MTH/Lionels (traditional) are really awesome too.

Love modeling in 3RS, but the operating has been leaving me flat. Once they go around a few times... 

But running the tinplate is something different. It's infectious.

This is a journey I've navigated the past two years.  And while I'll always love O-Gauge hi-rail, you just gotta admit that Standard Gauge is the true epitome of toy trains.  Placed in the right setting, there's nothing better.  No need to worry about the details (or lack thereof).   The pure enjoyment lies in the fact that there's enough product charm there to just let the power of our brain fill in the (missing) details.  Doesn't get any better than that. 

Standard Gauge = toy train charm at its finest.

Joe, that exact color 400e is on my hit list. Gorgeous.

It does look nice, but you got to have some serious space to really make it look good.  Space is something I don't have.  I was quick to sell all the Std gauge I bought when I was dealing, cause I couldn't give up that much table space much less run it at home.  I do remember having a 3 car Ives passenger set running around the tree one Christmas in between train shows. 

You will be fine. You will enjoy yourself. I too will be fine. I think......... and my old beast isn't even running yet. There is probably some kind of contagious pod that grows in those old Standard Gauge carcasses. Congrats on finding your pod......

Mr. Hudson I have not seen a post from you in awhile Last I remember you were working on twin unit diner and kitchen for 20 th  century,  kitchen was finished and awesome did you finish the dining car  and could you post pics?  I've  asked before And inquired to your where abouts Hope all has been  well.

Hi! Thanks, I've been well, just took a break from actively posting. (I do that from time to time.)

I did finish the diner, but the car is at my train club. (Central Operating Lines.) I will be going there next week and I will photo it. (I may have some photos in my older computer, so I'll take a look.) Thanks for inquiring and have a happy holiday season!

I bought a 5 car MTH Lionel State Set, in C8/9 unrun condition for $525.00 at a Stoubt auction. (Plus buyer premium.) I think I did well. :-) Looking forward to getting it.

My 'new to me' 211 flat car. All original C7+ in very nice box. (Maybe a conservative C8). Yeah, the bug has bitten.

I don't know what kind of operation you are running, but that is definitely not a full load of barrels.  I'd say eight more and you can make a profitable run.  You need a nice crane.  Everybody should have a nice crane.  Well, every maroon gondola should have a nice 219 crane anyway.  Have fun!

I was told (on another thread) that the official as-sold load was 4 barrels. I've got 6 :-P  But yeah, a nice crane.

Get a crane.  Lighten your load.  You won't regret it.

Just missed a great crane on eBay the other day. Missed the separate box too. Kids distracted me and it went... cheap too.

I thought I had a nice 1835E till the last sec tonight.  I'm good.  A man's got to know his limitations.  Going to post pics tomorrow of a brown baby state set I got today.  Nice 318 with cars.  Cheers!
