I recently acquired an interesting A.F. wide gauge box car #4008. This car is especially interesting because it uses a Lionel standard gauge #14 box car body, but with A.F. trucks, A.F. stamping on the bottom, and a modification to the Lionel coupler. In 1926 Lionel was phasing out the 10 series of freight cars and A.F. had not yet produced their own. A.F. purchased Lionel freight car bodies, added their own trucks, and modified the couplers by cutting one "ear" off so that they would fit in the existing slot in the Flyer couplers. The freight cars were only produced for one year and were not included in sets. A.F. did not change the color from the Lionel versions. I have included pictures of the Lionel #14 and the Flyer #4008 version. Now I need to find some more!
