with metro link having limited availability to permit the bigboy to be moved over their line I do not believe there will be any delays.  The UP crew learned a lot from the 4018 move. twitter and facebook are jumping with info.

Just got home. Stopped at the Fairgrounds on the way. The Big Boy will move out onto the Metrolink tracks around 1:00-1:30am. The last Metrolink train will be through there around 11:00pm PST, they'll have a last safety meeting and the UP diesels will move in. Metrolink isn't cutting in a switch; they're cutting into the line and will hook up with the panel track 4014 is sitting on.

They've installed new air lines, a generator, and compressor for 4014. Apparently, they're setting up so that it will have its own brakes as part of the train. There had been some speculation that they were going to have a couple of loaded ballast cars on either end for braking. I'll see what things look like in Covina in the morning.

It will be in Covina in the morning from 7:00am-8:00am, then will head to Basset, just west of the El Monte Metrolink station. From there it's going through the Alhambra sub to Colton where it will go through some additional work and wait until spring to head to Utah.

UP, Metrolink, Fairplex, and the LA Chapter of the Locomotive Preservation Society have been very accommodating to rail fans and visitors. The locomotive has been very accessible for pictures ane everyone is staying out of the way when work is being done. Kudos to all.

I'm not bored by it. I'm just not interested.

There is a difference.

The stories on this thread remind me of a modern day DOWNTON ABBET!

Why, is Carson the Butler in charge of the move?

Rusty

Carson:  No, my Lady, I am NOT.  Mr. Dickens is.

Violet:  CHARLES?????

The 4014 BiG Boy is now on rails of the national rail network.  They made the move this morning from L.A. Fairgrounds to Covina, Calif. and after being on display for about 90 minutes departed at 8:30AM for Basset on the U.P. Main and West Colton about 45 miles away.  It is probably there by now.  Saw some pictures of it enroute.  They used a total of four diesels.  Two in the lead with about 10 hopper cars for braking followed by the 4014 sandwiched between the UP 4884 and UP1996 which is the heritage unit.  I guess the 4884 represents the wheel arrangement of the Big Boy.

Here's video of the train leaving the Covina station. I found a good spot away from my "300 closest railfanning friends." I drove ahead to the Baldwin Park station anf shot video from the second level of the parking structure across the street. There was a woman waiting for a Metrolink train. she seemed a bit surprised.

BTW, it was good to see you again Ray. You're looking well. And diesel #4884 was no coincidence. I see a video for sale in a few years after restoration is complete. The estimates I last heard were 3-5 years and $4-7M for the restoration.

Matt, it was likewise good to see you.  That was a super good video.  Glad you were able to get it.  I didn't get much with that little point and hope camera I had.    Just lots of people staring at a dead steam engine.  I saw the rods turning on the BB faster than parking lot speed for the first time on your video.  Thanks for posting.

Oh Yeah! I'd say close to 300. It was hard to keep from ruining other people's camera shots as I moved around to get my camera shots. There were about 100 people at Fairplex in Pomona at 8:00pm Saturday night.

Ray. You're most welcome. I was glad I could get some good shots. Here are a couple I took today.

As said above, I can't thank you enough for the video and pictures.  Truly awesome!  And, I appreciate answering my questions, been thinking about this all day.  My wife said I seemed, 'disconnected'!

I hope I am in the crowd.  When time gets closer, we may take a vacation to see it. Will be incredible!
