This morning, everything in my train-room, EVERYTHING, is in its place on a shelf: all the locos, all the rolling stock, all the 'Streets vehicles, all the diecast cars normally parked along the streets, etc.  All of it is on shelves.  Only stuff glued down is still on the layout - permanent parts of it like buildings and figures - is still on the layout.

This has been a goal for several years.  I didn't have enough shelf space, and had to use the layout for storage: several train's worth of locos and rolling stock had to be on the layout at any time.  When I wanted to run a different train I had to switch out stuff from shelves: put this loco on the layout, take that one off and put it on the shelf in its place.  Same for 'Streets and diecast cars: something had to stay on the layout at any time.

No longer.  Over the last year I added a shelves: lots of them. I was surprised me when I added it up - 386 feet of new shelves!  Added to 165 feet I already have. Over 550 feet now.  Sounds like a lot, and I suppose it is.  But its 85% full . . .

I added gobs of shelves under the edges of the layout and above the layout and on the walls and, well, just everywhere I could . . . .

Slide1

I added shelves in out-of-the-way places (these swivel out so I can get to them).

Slide2

And this morning I decided to test it out.  And there is room for everything.

All of my steamers are on a shelves, each in its place. When one or another of this is on the layout, there will be an empty space on a shelf ready for it if and when it come offs and something else goes onto the layout.

Slide3

All the diesel and turbine locos have their homes, too . . . and every special train has its special shelf . . .

Slide4

And all the 'Streets vehicles and the diecast cars.

Slide5

The layout is completely bare . . . no locos, no rolling stock "stored" on it . . .

Slide6

Nary a train in sight . . . . or a 'Streets car or truck, or a diecast model

Slide7

Downtown looks surreal - like from cheap '50s science fiction movie.  The people and buildings are  there, but without all the 'Streets and parked vehicles, it looks strange.

Slide8

The residents of my little town are taking it in stride, although some of them feel disconnected.  My two English sports car nuts miss their Healey and Truimph.  Steve McQueen (to the right of center far to the back in the photo below) is standing in the street, keys in his hand, about to unlock a green Mustang GT that is not there - but he's cool with it - he's always cool.  Steed and Peel (right edge on sidewalk) wonder where his Bentley and her Elan went.  the guys in front of the Harley dealership wonder where all the bikes went . . .

Slide9

Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee figure where there Dodge Power wagon went is just another mystery to solve . . . Bond misses his Aston, but at least he still has his trusty Walther PPK,  And Veranda Turbine is puzzled about where her Dual Ghia went, but knows she needs to focus on the attentions of John Wayne and Dean Martin at the moment.  They all trust the cars and the trains will come back . . . hopefully soon.

Slide10

And there is even room for growth: shelf space for every loco on pre-order, etc., and even room for more shelves to be added in the future.  But today, while the layout is bare, there is opportunity: I plan to dust and vacuum every square inch this afternoon, fix a few minor issues requiring attention including some re-wiring under the layout (Ugh!) and then set up everything again.

Tthis was a minor victory in the grand scheme of things, but very satisfying.

Everything?

I like to keep a train at the ready on the layout at all times for impromptu visitors who want to see or for those quick 15 minute operating sessions while I'm waiting for the family to get ready if we are going out.

Having to pull stuff of the shelf to set up a train every time, might frustrate me a little bit.

But it does look nice and tidy.  I need to remove tools from my layout.

Darn, you beat me to it. I was just thinking of that..

So when your little world returns to normalcy, I am sure your 85% shelf occupancy will be at the least down to 70%. So you should be good for quite some time.

I know what you mean. I have 8 lines all dedicated and no place to run anything other. However ironically the way I have it set up is the way that I like it and any change I really would not like. But that still does not help me with the fact that if I want to run something other, that I have no place to do so :-(

Gee...somebody who is organized, vs., on another planet, my workplace that looks like an explosion in a  boiler factory.  And while I had installed those five shelf metal racks down two walls, I am out of shelf space, as the large structures,  grain elevators and stamp mills, etc., eat it fast.  (my cheap source for metal shelving dried up) These

look like custom made and decorative wooden shelves, too.  Highly efficient. Embarrassing

In the Avengers it will always be Diana Rigg for me.  She was hot and smart then, and was still hot and smartfour decades later in Mrs. Bradley.

Don't get me wrong, I liked Tara King, and she was hot, although frankly, not quite Erin-Gray-in-Buck-Rogers hot . . . in that Buck Rogers costume Colonel Wilma Deering was as hot that if she'd been buck . . . well, you know!

Joe

Uhh. . . well, many people here will think I'm dumb to do do, but I don't.  The trains aren't going anywhere while I'm here and once I'm not, I really don't care, so why keep the boxes.   So I get rid of the them.  I give them to a friend if they are major and useful, otherwise I dump them in the cardboard recycling dumpster behind the building where my business is located.

Lee,

Your layout is freaking epic! What is your favorite type of train to run on it? Also what are your thoughts on sliding glass door train shelves under the layout table instead of a curtain to help maximize train storage? Im trying to see if it will work on my future layout, I think it will work on yours.

Dan

Looks like it all turned out very nice and you accomplished your long term goal for storage. Hope you get to enjoy it for a while before it fills back up and you are out of space once again.

I have no shelves, more trains than will fit on the layout and the boxes are a massive problem too (both full and empty). I can not yet bring myself to do as you have with the boxes though. Maybe someday?
