Walkersville Southern in Walkersville, MD, just a few miles north of Frederick, will be running STEAM the next three weekends including Memorial Day Monday. 

 

Coal fired 0-6-0T Lehigh Valley Coal Company #126 of the Gramling Family will be running. Passenger trains and railfan specials will be offered. 

 

We are only 1 hour north of Washington DC and Baltimore and the closest operating steam this time of the year in both the Baltimore and DC areas. Also ride our other diesel trains throughout the year- we have a very unique collection of diesel locomotives that you don't often see anymore such as side-rod equipped Davenports, an EMD Model 40, two 44 tons, and a 45 ton. Another Davenport is currently undergoing restoration. I can't think of any other railroad in the US that has  a collection of industrial "critters" like we do!

 

I also get to be fireman on three runs shoveling coal.

For those not familiar with the WSRR, they have an extremely friendly crew, and are very kid friendly. The ride is not so long that kids get bored.  I recommend it highly.One of the two Davenports has a 4-speed manual truck transmission that the engineer must shift in operation.  The EMD Model 40 is a rare bird, and as I recall only has 2 axles.  CSX Fan, who posted above, owns a 44-ton.

There is also a side-rod equipped 45ton on the property, the usual power for the dinner trains. It was also out switching Sunday afternoon.

 

CSX Fan owns both of the PRR 44ts on the property.

 

Davenport #2 is the one with the truck transmission...also has side rods. Neat little loco.

 

 Plymouth #1 is out on display in the yard and another Davenport is under restoration inside the engine house.

 

#101, the Model 40 has been seeing a lot of action recently. Unless it has switched spots in the engine house, I would imagine it will be running this weekend. From what I've found, it is the only operating Model 40 in existence.

I'm not aware of the 101 (Model 40) ever being painted as a WM unit. It has had magnetic PRR heralds put on it, as pictured above and below. It did come from the Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum under lease, then eventual purchase by WS so Hagerstown may have applied Western Maryland lettering. 

 

EDIT - I guess I can see the WM black and yellow but not aware of it actually being lettered Western Maryland. May have been back in the 1990s before coming to WS. Not sure how long Hagerstown had it before leasing it to WS. 

 

 THIS VIDEO shows the 101 (Model 40) and 45 (45 ton) in operation. #45  is privately owned as are the 9339 and 9331 (44ts)
