Wow!! I had completely missed the fact that the Blue Comet and Southern Crescent have completely different bodies!  Am I the only one who never noticed this?

I had assumed that all three - Alton, B.C. and S.C. were basically the same casting and same length, etc., with just some different piping and such added, and of course, different paint.  I did note the different tenders pictured in the catalog (B.C.'s appears a little shorter than S.C.'s).  Now that I know the locos themselves have totally different bodies, I again looked in the catalog and can see that, yes, it shows some difference in the bodies, but frankly in the catalog the B.C. looks to be the smaller  But side by side . . . a remarkable difference: the Blue Comet is much larger, although it has a much shorter tender so overall it is a slightly shorter combination.

Length from tip of cowcatcher to rear of cab roof:  Blue Comet, 14 1/8"     Southern Crescent 13 1/4"

Length of body of tender (exclusive of couplings, etc.)  Blue Comet  7 3/4"  Southern Crescent 9 7/8"

I pre-ordered the Southern Crescent and have had if for quite some time (and have repainted it flat black).  I only ordered the Blue Comet after seeing F-V Train's.

I did not notice the big difference until I put the Blue Comet on the shelf today after running it again to test the whistle sound and then put the S.C. on the shelf right below it in order to do some track maintenance this afternoon.  In the picture below, the tips of their cowcatchers are exactly one above the other (and yes, that is the Southern Crescent on the lower shelf - I repainted it, remember).

I will also note that the catalog seems to show a slightly different tender shape for the B.C., and completely neglects showing the incredible, awesome painted and striped drivers it has (maybe the most beautiful feature on it) - in the catalog (on-line anyway) the drivers as just shown as black metal.  I think if Lionel has shown those drivers correctly I probably would have ordered one originally, too.

The picture of the blue comet in the catalog was an engineering sample or mock up.  Many of us noticed that the picture on the front catalog was very different from the side view, and Lionel corrected that for many of us on the fence at the time.  You will notice the online version of the catalog is correct.

Hearing the whistle for the first time was disappointing having been very familiar with the awesome whistle in the 2001 / 2002 model.  The Lionel video demonstrating the product came out after my engine was ready for pickup going through a thorough check up that everything was 100% in working order.  There was no way I was going to stick it to my dealer!

I realized that the models were different when only the Crescent got the switches under the sand dome and the alton and blue comet has them on the bottom.  If they were the same model with minor changes, why would they not put the switches on the top?  What I didn't realize was that the size was different which you pointed out.  Still, the Crescent and Blue Comet are stunning to my eyes and I'm glad there are differences as there should be.  For this Lionel get points.  Now I'm just hoping for a better sounding whistle...

Well, I had seen the Alton, as well as the Southern Crescent, in person. I never saw my Blue Comet until unpacking it. In retrospect, I liked the body style of the Alton & Chicago, but I didn't like the details; I liked the detail of the Southern Crescent, but wasn't really crazy about the shape/proportions.

The wife always liked "the Blue one." She said that I needed "a different color" to "make it more interesting." Always listen to "the boss!"

In the picture in the catalog, it is hard to tell but it looks like they show it painted black.  I just looked: on my Blue Comet it is all blue.

By the way, my Southern Crescent sounds just a tiny a bit better (in terms of chuffing, I'm not going to touch the whistle thing at all . . .:-) ) than the Blue Comet.  The sound is a bit deeper and fuller.   I assume because the larger tender acts as a slightly better resonance chamber for the speaker of something.
