BN

I came across this picture the other day.  I don't recall ever seeing this in O Gauge before.  It struck me because it's so different from most of the Burlington Northern color schemes you typically see.  The more I look at this the more I think it might look very striking as an E unit.  Maybe a future 3rd Rail run, Scott?    Or perhaps appearing in some future MTH catalog as a Premier E-8 ABA set?? Would anyone else possibly be interested in this?

That is the E unit that was part of the BN Executive F/E unit "set", which consisted of an A-B pair of completely rebuilt "F" units at the BN West Burlington, Iowa Back Shop. Both the A and the B were up-graged to "GP38-2 components", thus becoming F38-2 A&B units for Executive Train motive power. The dark free styling was the same as developed for all the BN SD70MAC units. The BN-3 was a former commute service E9, that received a "quick overhaul" and repainted into the same "Executive F unit" styling.

After the BN & Santa Fe merger, all three Executive units were donated to the Illinois Railway Museum, in Union Illinois. All three units should still be operational, although faded a bit.

That paint scheme is referred to as "Grinstein Green" after former BN president Jerry Grinstein.  As HW noted, it was used for the BNs SD70MAC that were assigned to coal service.  MTH has them in the current catalog.

Scale F units in the executive paint scheme would be nice.  So would F units in Cascade green.  The BN ran F units through the 1970s and into the early 80s. They even ran F7s and F3s late, not just the former NP F9s.

I'd be happy to see a plain old Cascade green SD40-2.  The BN used to run them 5 at a time over Stevens Pass.  If MTH does them with fixed pilots I'll take 3.

Hey there, HW and Ted.  Thanks for the interesting responses, I learned something.

I do know about the SD70MACs in this color...I picked up one about 6 months ago, in fact.    I kind of like it, which is why I asked about the E units.  But I also agree with you Ted, if no one offered E-8s or 9s, I might be interested in seeing F units in the executive paint scheme.

Ted,

Mr. Grinstein was President and CEO of BN, not BNSF. When the Santa Fe "took over" the BN, officially a merger, the board of directors specifically wanted the Santa Fe "Management Team", thus the BN executives all received "golden parachutes".

Thanks for the catch.  I guess I've gotten too used to typing the initials of the Big New Santa Fe.  My apologies to Matt Rose.

Ted,

Just my opinion but, I would't think an apology to Matt Rose would be necessary. Now an apology to Robert D. Krebs (of Santa Fe fame, and previously Southern Pacific) would be in order, since he was the first President & CEO of the of the new BNSF Rwy. after the merger took place.

Nope. The BNSF donated all three executive units to the Illinois Railway Museum, i.e. the A-B F units, as well as the E unit.

As much as I love the old home RR (I used to live near Chicago) off the Chicago to Aurora 3 or 4 track mainline

3 track main line from Aurora to Chicago Union Station.

............I have to admit some of the previous paint schemes were pretty staid.

This is an important engine to me:

I wish MTH had made it available with scale wheels. I can always convert it. I'm hoping the rest of the detailing is updated. Even the MU hoses to the finer ones.

I do like the green.... (better)

Got your book coming.

Thank you Jim!

I'm finding that these books are great for me. Well for learning. Trouble now is, I'm after even more engines! ( at least I used to stick with modern only) Darn Chessie System book got me hunting for more. That B&O and C&O had some mean looking machines.

I would like a set of the Executive SD70MAC's pulling a long hopper train.....someday. Outback in G scale too.

Don't tell my girl!!

As a Northwest kid watching the NP and SP&S change to the green scheme, it took a while to warm up to it, but I have 3 of the BN TMCC SD's and model a normal freight as used to leave Pasco often in the 70's.

The only way I would buy an executive BN is if the passenger cars were also available similar to those run by BN up to the point AMTRAK took over.

You have to be a true Burlington Northern fanatic to like that Grinstein Green scheme.

I like some of the BN schemes. That is not one I like.

Andrew

I respectfully disagree, I am not a BN Fanatic, and I do Miss/prefer the Cascade Green and Black, I much prefer the Grinstein Green scheme to ANY of the schemes with Orange in them.

All three units were operating this weekend during the Diesel Days event at IRM. Unfortunately, my good camera has a broken lensmount, so I only had my old cell phone camera , but here is a grabshot of the Executive E-unit operating A-B-A with the Milwaukee E-unit and the Wisconsin & Southern E-B-unit.
