Lionel 1688 Motor Options

Is this what it looks like?

I think I have one as is pictured in a box somewhere.  I'd be willing to part with it for a lot less tah the guy on e-bay.  If there is interest, I can dig it out, test it, & take photos.  I do recall that there is a chip out of the rim on a driver, but that it ran ok last time I tried it, 20 or 30 years ago.

Honestly, motors of that type are common. This is one of those times when you're stuck with two choices. Replace the motor or buy another engine. The cost is almost the same.

Note, there are 2 different motors for this engine, a early sheet metal motor and a later die cast motor. The one you need will depend on where the E-unit slot is.

*** the one listed on ebay........ you can purchase 2 complete locos for the price of the motor listed.

It would be nearly impossible to pull the field and armature out of a sheet metal frame motor. Grabbing a cast framed motor would be very easy.

I have a couple pictures of the loco in question and the reverse lever looks to be just ahead of two small projections on top of the boiler. Photos aren't the best being taken with an iphone.

A straight on side view would be most helpful.

I don't have the piece in my possession so this is the best I can do, Photo provided by the owner.

Looks like a sheet metal side frame motor. How did they get the field out without destroying it though.

This is a sheet metal motor version for sure!   I have one of these motors if you want, just let me know. The die-cast motor will not fit the mounting holes in the die casting of the 1688. BTW- The motor is rebuilt & ready to mount in the casting. Take care.

I'll let you have the motor for $55.00 as it is rebuilt & has new drive wheels, plus the E-Unit was also rebuilt. It has many new parts (old & repro) too. Just send an e-mail & let me know. Take care.
