Marx 333

I have a 333.  But I use a Marx SP tender, because I am a "Friendly" sort  of fan!

forgot to clarify, Pete is from California. I am from Northern New York State

and sent the motor out to Pete to join up with his 333 body/shell.

Great-looking locomotive!  I've been looking for a nice 333 myself, and you've only increased my desire!

My Marx 333 is a good performer now, but was in rough shape when I got it. It came with the original die-cast tender but I've used different tenders with it. Still need to add missing parts of valve gear.

It has rather short legs for a Pacific-type, so I consider it a freight loco.

I thought K-Line was going to use the 333 in there S Gauge line when they began using the old Marx 3/16 box car tooling in S Gauge.

I didn't think you could install an 1829 motor in the 333.  According to this page

Marx's 333 is a great engine.  Personally, I think it was their best.  Its got a fair amount of cast in detail and is a smooth runner.  I have two of them.  One of them is the smoking version while the other is not.  At about age 64 the smoking version's original smoke unit still produces prodigious amounts of smoke.  Its running on my layout right now. 

Never had the fortune to own one... It looks like the 490's big brother though to be honest, and I do like that model...

Good to see a 333 brought back to life!  I like the looks of the 333 - probably one of the best looking steamers Marx made - but it was only built in an electric version.  I decided to rectify that oversight, so I modified a Marx riser gear windup motor to have six drive wheels and installed it in a 333 shell.  I'm glad to have a 333 that I can run on the windup layout:

I like my 333 but that diecast tender weighs a ton !!

well they must be interchangeable because I got those pics from Pete and he said she is running great.

Not sure what the author means, but this is what it said:  

"So while they are essentially the same, a 333 motor will not fit or work in an 1829, and is just visibly wrong going the other way. The piston side rods are also usually (but not always) different on the two non-smoking motors."

I have a 333 with the fat wheel (and one of the wheels is loose on its axle.)  I've seen scrap-quality 1829s at meets, and never bought one to harvest the motor b/c I didn't want it to look "wrong."  If the swap works and looks good I'll consider it.  Thanks for sharing!

I actually ended up taking all the valve gear and side rods off of the old motor and put them on the new one. The old one was a bit rustier and didn't look as good. The wheel spokes were also a bit dirty. Some WD40 and a lot of scrubbing got the job done. I also ended up swapping the steam chests too. The old one wasn't as rusty as the new one. Once again, put 2 and 2 together. 

Loco is running better than ever and looks just as it did when I first layer eyes on it. Thanks Popi!

Only problem is, the little Marx 50 watt transformer isn't enough for the 333 and 5 cars. Time to get the KW out!

I have a smoker but it's not a good puller. Nice looking though.

They aren't good pullers, if only they had a traction tire.

Don't have the funds quite yet ��Gotta settle for the KW for now but someday. I wonder how fast a Marx could go on 20v at 275 watts?

My 333 is a good puller. Looks like a previous owner installed a big hunk of lead weight in the forward part of the motor frame where there is ample space. I added some more weight in the back to balance it out.

Caution, Marx motors WILL fry after about 15-16V.

That wind-up conversion has to be one of a kind, and is opposite to what most of Marx is changed to....certainly indicates these engines are appreciated...

Don't worry. I measured the track voltage and i'm only getting 11v when the transformer says 16v. I'm getting a huge voltage drop somewhere in my inside loop.
