Mixing 0 with standard Gauge

On the old Lionel Sceneic Railways they ran O up top and Std. on the bottom, I think it gives the illusion of depth without using up too much space.

I run both without any problems. Granted, you can try the,"forced perspective" if you like. You will find that the concept takes up more space. You will need to go up and away from the public vantage point. Also, you must buy your trains wisely.

A lot of the layouts I saw as of youth were able to mix them rather well.

 

Fritz Von Tagen and Chris and Marlene Rohlfing had a single Standard Gauge loop with sidings encompass the larger O gauge section of the layout.

This will give you an idea how I do it on my layout. I have O gauge on the outer loop with the standard gauge next to it so you can still see the standard gauge behind the O scale loop.

I like the way you did it Chris, looks great!

 

From stem to stern 16'x8'   The upper level at the far end had to be removed for the new floor that had to be installed after a water pipe broke in the train room after the nasty winter we had.

boucher, you say the size difference seems too great?  This is tinplate, no such thing as scale, anything goes. That's one of the great things about tinplate, no rules, if you like it then all is well. I personally like seeing O and Std gauge together, your preferences my be different however.

I hear what you're saying, but a Lionel 252 loco looks like a kiddie land ride when it runs along side of an AF President's Special, or an Ives Long cab, or even a 400E.

 

My advice..........don't worry about it. My Dad's layouts always had Std. and O together and he never gave it a thought that things were out of proportion.  Nothing else in tinplate is done to scale, so why worry about mixing O and Std. on the same layout? I'm in the process of designing my new layout and it will most definitely have both O and Std. And if space allows, I'm even going to squeeze in a loop of HO. Have fun!!

I have become a big fan of making 5 rail track, run both.

Like I stated above, you have to be selective on train size. If you want to run the monster Std Gauge. Run a 256 with 1700 series cars on your O-Gauge. Try a 260E also.

 

To look nice you can run a 8, 10 or 318 with 310 or 320 series passenger or 500 series freight. Remember the 8 & 10 are smaller Std Gauge electric profile. Run these with your O-Gauge. It's all about experimentation .
