I am in the process of getting the basement ready for a layout. I already have a z4000 transformer and several conventional engines. Does the MTH remote work well?

If you have MTH engines then yes but you will only be able to control 1 engine at time. The full DCS system would be better.

The remote you are showing is to run the Z4000 transformer remotely, and not the MTH DCS engines per se. You can remotely run up to 3 Z4000s with the remote as long as you have 3 receivers. So you can run up to 6 tracks with this remote up to 30 feet away from the transformer/s. It was designed for conventional operation back in the late 90s and is usually hard to come by.
As far as I know it does work well for what it was designed for.
Yes it will run two conventionel (mth, williams, rmt and lionel) engines at a time on independent loops of track. I really like mine and it works well. It also works with control engines but conventional. Its actually a controller for your z4000. so it operates just like your z4000.

If you go to the MTH web site for that item it shows in stock in quite a few locations, one in Syracuse NY. I believe MTH had a relatively recent run of that item in the last few years because they were very popular.

Just ordered a new one from Nassau, used the 15% coupon and FREE shipping.
So now that I bought one I was wondering if I have 2 Z4000 transformers can I use 2 of the 4001 remotes or are they all the same frequency? I know one remote can control up to 3 transformers with the added receivers but I thought it would be nice to let 2 people (grandkids) each have there own controller.
I suspect as long as you're not both trying to change settings at the same time they'll work. The frequency is the same, these are like the old TMCC CAB1, they only transmit when something is changing.
The remote has a switch at the bottom allowing 3 different Z to be controlled. So one remote can be switched to 1 and control the 1 Z; the second remote can be placed on 2 and control the other Z.
