Hi has anyone ever repaired a z40-4000 i have one that works sometimes with all features and then other times it just quits. I believe it has something to do  with the digi8tal read out processor board!I believe it just locks up and you have to remove the digital readout board and inspect it and then reinstall it and it works again for a short period of time, does anyone believe it could be a capacitor as usually with my experience if it was micro processor related it would never would started up at all. i even tried the factory program reset 18 and it worked perfectly and within a few minutes it locked up again! the other symptom is when you first turn it on both short and power lights come on. only when you can turn the transformer on with both throttles in the off position that sometimes it might work?

seriously confused and since i have no schematic i can only do deductive reasoning to the probable cause any idea's

thanks for anyones help!

I was just checking the reset program feature to make sure the transformer worked, that what i was doing, and yes i already new if both throttle were full on you would get a short light! nOriginally Posted by Marty Fitzhenry:

Reset 18?  I am trying to figure what you are doing with that.  Feature 18 is a reset for original Protosounds locomotives.  You should have someone (MTH TECH) who knows it work on it.  I see you may be a repair tech.

Thanks for the suggestion I'll call mth this afternoon. In the mean time I'll probably test  the ac ripple on the dc power supply that is running the transformer micro processor board! I've seen this kind of problem when i use to repair micro processor boards when i use to work for a nuclear power plant repairing microprocessors based systems, and i have seen ac ripple on dc power supply causing this kind of lockup in microprocessor circuits. thanks for any help  that any one can provide
Sincerely thanks Alan

hi again George i talked to MTH tech support about the transformer z40-4000 and told them about the issues of short light coming on! he stated that you have to make sure both control pots are adjusted so the potentiometers are fully closed or at the end stop  at the same time, i told him that the problem only happens after the transformer is turn on it might only work for a few minutes and then the light comes back on. i to told him i had to reset the microprocessor board and all there plugs, and then it will work again for a few minutes. he only said check the potentiometers.I don't think he had any idea at all but he did say the processor board cost around $100.00from MTH! hi again George i talked to mth yesterday about my z40-4000 transformer that i had talked to you about before . he suggested checking the potentiometer Originally Posted by GGG:s, he said they both have to be timed so they are both shut of at the time. I had already knew that, and it was not the problem, he said on power up the transformer checks to see that both controls are off or the red overload light will come on.That's not the problem, when you reset the processor board and make sure all connectors are on and plugged in tight sometimes it will come on and work, It will only work for a few minutes and then the same symptom happens again red light and locked up, will not work again until sits a while and board processor is reseated again!do you have any idea,s George? im wondering if there is a leaky capacitor braking down under voltage or possible has lost a lot of its uf hence it lets ac noise ripple into the electronic and causes a lockup of the transformer processor due to noise on the dc line! anyone, have any ideas, he said the board "processor brd is around $100.00 but i wanted the challenge of fixing the transformer myself.I use to repair anything in electronics when i worked for PSEG before i retired. even repaired XRAY machine and explosive bomb detectors.
would appreciate any help. sincerely thanks to all you great guys!
Alan
