Need help with 3rd Rail N.P Z-6 articulated with EOB

Dear group:

 

I have the above subject locomotive equipped with TAS EOB direct from the factory.  It ran bone reliably since purchased.  When I ran this locomotive at Cleveland, I lost the sound.  While at the show, I tried resetting the whole locomotive, with no result.  The motor control continues to work fine.

 

Per Gunrunner John's request, I downloaded the TAS manual, and tried the R2LC reset procedure in there, with no result.

 

Now I have also lost motor control.  When I select the locomotive, typical of a TAS EOB locomotive, it moved forward at the lowest speed step.  Now though, it starts to accelerate shortly after, and will not respond to commands.  

 

Can anybody provide some hints on what may be going on?   If I need boards for TAS, are they still available?

Thanks for getting back to me.  Here is where I am at tonight.

I would pull off the R2LC and Sound boards and reseat.  Make sure speaker is good.  Go back and reset board and ID.  Make sure antenna is connected and not grounded.  Try it again.   G



G, I pulled off both boards, and reseated them. Antenna is connected.  On 3rd Rail, the tender shell is the antenna.  So, that means that I should not have any connection between the tender shell and the tender wheels.  It ohms out 0. 

Now where the ground is, I do not know.  Next step will be to remove the antenna wire from the tender shell, and see what happens.  I may end up running an external antenna under the coal load like I did on my Z-8.  It never did work right with the tender shell ground. 

Gunrunnerjohn, I tried the Z-6 locomotive with my Z8 tender, everything worked fine.  Flywheel sensor works fine.  I hate swapping around boards from a perfectly good loco, so I will probably be sending back stuff for you to test / repair.  I'll e-mail you off list. 

 

I'm going to play some more, and see where I get.  If I can get back to having motor control thru TMCC, then at least I will have solved the antenna ground issue. 

I'd appreciate any feedback on what I'm planning.

Most likely shell is contacting frame somewhere.  Check for nylon screws vice metal, or properly insulated.  Check tape around shell to insulate.  I would hope solving your antenna issue fixes this.  Since it was working fine.

 

I would remove shell, add separate wire as temp antenna and test engine.   G
