Greetings Everyone,

Just a quick FYI.  Just picked -up one of the Brand New Rail King GE Evolution Hybrid ES44ACe Imperial Diesel Engine With Proto-Sound 3.0.  First impression, very cool.  Got it home, not so much.  I had the Tech at the local shop test run the engine before I headed home and she ran great, in conventional mode.  I should have had the Tech test it in DCS as well because when I got her home and tried to fire her up using my DCS Remote Commander, she just sat there, silent.   Tried her in Conventional Mode and again she ran just fine.  Called my dealer back and informed him of the problem.  he told me a little secret using the IR Remote to "reset" the locomotive but it didn't work.  His response, "that's weird, bring it back and we'll fix it right away".  Anybody else experience this condition?

That engine was run at some time before you got it and has an address other than one.  Go back to the store and have the Tech do a factory DCS reset.  You will be good to go when you get it home.

Your dealer was telling you to do a factory DCS reset.  Or I hope he did.  He should know that if he sells MTH products.

Do check what rrman stated first.

Marty,

That is exactly what I am going to do.  I called the dealer and the Tech told me to try the Remote Commander Reset Sequence using the IR Remote and that didn't work, (Press the Sound, Direction and the Minus Side of the Throttle Button).  Also, I checked what rrman stated in his reply and this engine has neither of those switches.  I appreciate your in-put as a MTH Tech.

This seems to be the norm with MTH engines. Unless it is a RTR set, it is not going to operate with the remote commander unless you do a factory reset. That should change with the newer engines but I'm pretty sure these get tested after being built with DCS. My Alco S2 was this way. I know this was never opened and tested by the seller.

The Remote Commander is only capable of operating a DCS engine with an ID number of 1. If a Proto 2 or 3 loco has been introduced to a DCS system at any time it's ID number will be reassigned to something else, and your Commander remote will be talking to thin air (at least from the engine's perspective)

Proto 3 locos all have the DCS/DCC and 2rail/3rail capability. The most recent RailKing locos omit the switches since few (if any) 2-railers--who are the ones typically use DCC--would buy RailKing locomotives.

Just some background..

This new engine has neither of those switches.

I don't think it will if it is a Railking model.   This is reserved for Premier models that can be converted over to 2-Rail.   At least as far as I know.  You should have pots for volume and smoke, and I think that's it.   Still pretty sure this is an address issue.

Interesting and good to know as I thought P-3 engines had switches, like it or not.

I guess these are comments/questions. I have 2 Railking Diesels with PS3 and they have the switches. They are a year or two old. I think the engine number for the DCS Remote Commander is actually 0. I think when the engine is restored to factory settings the engine number goes to 0. I was told that it had to be changed to 1-99 to run it with the DCS remote. Please correct me if I am wrong. I am fairly new to all this.

Your engines with two switches are Premier. If they have only 1 switch (DCS/DCC) they're early PS3 Rail King.

If you want to learn how DCS ID#'s really work, refer to page 209 in The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition.

This and a whole lot more is all in MTH’s “The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition", available for purchase as an eBook or a printed book at MTH's web store!

Greetings Everyone,

Well, I just returned home from Stockyard Express, (I asked if it was OK to tell everyone who my local MTH Dealer was and they said OK) with my Rail King GE Evolution Hybrid ES44ACe Imperial Diesel Engine With Proto-Sound 3.0 and she's Good To Go!  The guys that helped me (Dan the Certified MTH Tech and Adam the Multi Media Guru) were just AWESOME!  Very helpful and explained everything to me in terms even I can understand.  Apparently it was just as Marty Fitzhenry said, it needed to have a "Factory Reset".  Dan took the time to explain why this happened and Adam checked everything out on the test track.  Dan even checked-out another diesel, (See my post regarding the MTH Remote IR Commander) which had the same problem and took care of that as well.  I must say, because of the Premier Service and Outstanding Personalized Customer Care, I will be purchasing my MTH items from Stockyard Express exclusively.  As a matter of fact, I have a MTH DCS Set on Lay-A-Way even as I type this.  ALL the folks I personally encountered at Stockyard Express were GREAT!  Check-Out their WEB Site, (Adam takes care of that), it's Way Cool!  Also, thanks to all here on the forums who took the time to respond.  It is appreciated.

Howdy Everyone,

Well, I just couldn't wait so I went back to Stockyard Express today and picked-up my New MTH DCS Set.  I spoke to Brian, (Dan's Clone) and he gave me a few ideas for wiring my pike and just some good old fashioned friendly conversation, (a wonderful commodity these days).  I also spoke to Adam regarding the new MTH Ready To Run 2105 Catalog and ended up ordering another set.  Once again, because of the friendly atmosphere and good folks at Stockyard Express, they'll be my FIRST Choice for MTH Items.  'Nuff Said!

Barry,

Absolutely!  I just can't decide if I want to purchase and download the E Book or just get the bound copy.  Either way, I'm gonna get me a copy!

Chief Bob

'Sup Barry,

Well, I decided.  I bought and down loaded the Digital Book from MTH.  All I can say at this point is "WOW".  I can't wait to get started!  I was a little reluctant as I like to do some of my research in the bathroom, (you get the idea) but it's a little difficult even with a lap top and Wi-Fi, which is why I like the printed version.  After opening up the pass word protected file, the light bulb goes on (Hello, I can print only what I need at the time and retire to the bathroom, ah, I mean Research Library and I really don't need a book after all).   Thanks for taking the time to create this excellent publication.  The only down side is that I'm sure I will have many more questions once I start reading this.
