I have been spending time working on painting various brass models.     Attached are some for your viewing pleasure:

Beaver Creek UP boxcar

Rich Yoder NKP 50T hopper

Pacific Limited H21 hopper

various PSC underbodies

 

I know some of you will chirp about the h21.    Let me preface the conversation that these were not painted out of the shop.    I used a mix of platinum mist and graphite.      The car will be hit with several shades of rust and charcoal to simulate wear and tear.    I spoke at length to Rich Yoder who informed me that these cars quickly oxidized and rusted.     Hence I left the holidays on both sides of the car.     My next move will be to decal then shoot rust on both sides.     The Beaver Creek car is a model few here have seen.    Elegantly built the interior is exquisite: fine brass was etched to simulate real wood---not just the floor, but sides and ends!

The underbodies are from PSC 1945 reefers and a single sheathed car.

Nice work Brad! Love any UP cars painted with the "Road of the Streamliner's logo. 

 

Just curious, to my knowledge Beaver Creek imported "express boxcars" for use as head end cars on passenger trains or on express mail trains and they are shorter than standard boxcars. I've only seen them painted in either the Armour Yellow or Two Tone Gray schemes. Is this another BC car they imported or did you repaint one of the express BC's?

This might not be what you're looking for, but I can relay my experience and history with the Beaver Creek Express Boxcars. Beaver Creek was primarily an HO model importer in the late 80's up into the mid 90's and did only a few projects in 0 scale. About 1994-95 they announced the Union Pacific Express Boxcars (unique and never done before) and being a UP modeler I had to have one.  

 

There were three paint schemes (Yellow/Gray, Tutone Gray and Route of the Challengers Gray/Red) and two or three types of trucks (Allied, Symington and another). I order six, two for myself and the others for members of the KCMO O module group I belonged to at the time. I was a very small brass dealer at the time so we all got one for dealer cost, which I believe was around $195 painted. I prepaid for all the cars up front myself, as this is what Chuck required. 

 

The express BC's were imported unpainted and Chuck had an assortment of custom painters who painted them for Beaver Creek just like OMI did at the time. The paintwork was very, very good as you have seen if you own stock models.

 

Just after these cars arrived in the USA Chuck had a heart attack and passed away. This was before email, so magazines, snail mail and word of mouth was the only way to learn news of this sort. When I heard the news I called the number I had for BC but no one answered the phone. This went on for weeks so I started checking around with other dealers I knew.

 

I believe it was Bob Janzen (sp) who gave me good telephone numbers and after a month or so I spoke to Chucks wife who obviously had her life turned upside down and didn't know what she was going to do. We had many long distance conversations and I offered some suggestions and even offered to accept my cars unpainted. I figure unpainted cars was better than none, which still seemed to be a possibility.  

 

In the end, all turned out well. Chucks wife made arrangements to have my cars painted and I received them a few months later. I heard rumors not everyone was this fortunate, but I can't remember any of the details any longer. I was just elated I didn't lose $1200 that I couldn't afford to lose at the time. 

 

I know BC offered some O scale "old time" passenger cars in a set of 3, but don't think they did anything else.  Chuck certainly could be proud of the Express Boxcars as they are great!

There were a couple of variations on those as a coach, combine and business car set and I've seen them offered in a couple of different paint schemes as well.  Thought that BC also did a set of the Sierra cars, too.

Yep, those are all beautiful Brad. The Challenger paint scheme is a neat one for sure. I bought one of them and one of the Yellow/Gray cars. At that time the Yellow/Gray was my favorite as I was slowly collecting a set of Kemtron cars and kits as I wanted a UP "name" train and thought the express boxcar would be perfect. I've seen more prototype photos of the Challenger scheme than any other over the years and it has become a favorite of mine too. Beautiful!

Chuck had offered me the chance to paint most of his models but I declined as I didn't want to do production runs.  I didn't mind doing up to a dozen at a time, this way I didn't burn out.  Chuck had sent me most of the GN HO cabeese that had to be RE-painted.  I also did the V&T 3 car passenger sets in HO.  shortly after this he passed away.  He was never married at the end, it was a common law.  they both loved wolves and had quite a few.
