Hi!.  I'm new to the forum, so be easy on me.  I'm also new to DCS systems.  I just got done with installing A PS3 up grade in a PS1 rail king 4-6-4 Hudson steamer.  The kit came with everything you need.  I have two problems #1 no smoke for stack, It smoked before upgrade.  I cut the traces on the circuit board to isolated from the electronics. The smoke unit motor is working fine blowing air out the stack.  I check for power at the heating elements the voltage is there I checked for ohms at the elements reads 8.2.  Now, I remove the circuit board form the unit.  I put a positive wire at one end on the heating element and a negative on the other end and put power to them they worked Great, at any voltage I put to them.  My question here is are the wirers going to the element both positive because I checked for negative on both wires and there isn't  any.  Problem #2 The DCS loader  program won't load my proto sound file will not download to the engine.  I get a message can't find engine command board, I tried more then 6 times, Just won't download. I'm using a RS-232 - USB cable.  It's finding the TIU connection, But won't download sound file. I took some pictures of the engine and tender.

Hope this expands everything.  I'm from the postwar times and I'm trying to build a O gauge layout for my grandson he's only 3 but time I get this done he'll be 8 or older!.

So close and yet so far.

#1 You probably have it wired correctly and just need the sound file to turn on the heating element.  Just guessing.  Using the color installation manual posted on line is very helpful when wiring.

#2  Sound files are slow and a pain to load with an older PC or laptop.  Before I got my new laptop I had to set up sound file loading at my PC.  Be sure you have the correct sound file.

My PS2 Upgrade page may have some helpful info.

At MTH DCS NEWS see "•DCS Loader Program Installation/Operating Instructions " that may be helpful.

The bottom of this page 2 has some loader tips.

Susan, I think you are right.  When putting the smoke unit back on the loc.  I had a mishap a loose wire from my transformer was still hooked up and some how I hooked it on my ground strap and it short out my board,  The train was stilled powered up, I heard a pop and seen smoke from the board.  After looking into it further there's an IC unit burned out.  Now I need a new board or if they can repair it.  I couldn't find one on the internet.  so now I'm at a stand still.
