My original TIU #1 has lost one channel. I have multiple TIU 5's and also five DCS handheld remotes. Do I just delete TIU #1 from the remote then add the new TIU #1 and repeat that step with each handheld remote?  Do I unplug all TIU 5's that are multiple TIU 5's? That way the only TIU's operating are 1 to 4, with only one TIU 5 operating? This obviously isn't covered in the O Gauge Companion that I can find. Page 118 covers installing a new
TIU 1, but it does it by changing addresses of existing TIU's to make a space for a new TIU #1.
Help please.

I would just power up the new tiu to verify it's tiu #1  (a one blinker)

If it's TIU #1  it's a straight exchange. .  Just take the old one out and replace it with the new one./ The remote should have saved that the tiu is in super mode and whatever mode the var channels are in.  However that's easy to do again if necessary.

Mike,

Gregg's got it right.

However, be aware that you'll lose any Record/Playback sessions and Custom Sounds that you had recorded in that TIU.

There's no way around that.

This and a whole lot more is all in MTH’s “The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition", available for purchase as an eBook or a printed book at MTH's web store!
