A friend of mine asked me why his Lionel TMCC steamer with Odyssey is running so slow with just his ZW transformer, he says its very slow, whereas he's use to his postwar trains racing around the track. I've been running with command control so long now I don't know what advice to tell him? Would turning Odyssey switch off help?

Hi Paul, I run all my TMCC and Legacy engines off a post war ZW all the time and have never run into the problem you described.  I wish I had an answer for you but have you posted your question on the TMCC forum?  forum members who post there usually know a lot about TMCC problems or situations.

OK, this happened to me a long time ago before I had a Cab1 or Cab2 but had TMCC engines.  You can set a "cruise" speed so you can run these engines at 18volts with just a transformer.  So the good news is there is nothing wrong with the engine.  I called Lionel and they helped me ... there is a sequence you have to perform with the engine and the ZW to get it out of speed set .. the bad news is I forgot what that was ... Let me go and get a TMCC manual and see if there is something in there .... 

A cruise equipped locomotive will be slower in conventional operation for the same throttle settings, nature of the beast.  They keep some power "in reserve" to maintain the set speed for a particular track voltage.  So, if you have 18 volts on the track for full throttle, the cruise control will typically only give you the speed for 14-16 volts, the extra power is the reserve.
