I see that there is a train show at the Timonium Fairground this weekend. I'm relatively new to the hobby and was wondering about opinions of the show and whether or not it is worth attending. I'll be visiting family this weekend which will bring me not too far away from the show. It looks like according to the website there will be several club displays which I think the kids might like. For me, I have a loop of O that runs around the Christmas tree and am looking at building a switching shelf layout in HO - any thoughts on whether this would be a good show to attend to expand my new hobby?

The show is one of the best in the country. All the major vendors display their stuff and there are usually some clinics too. When I went a few years ago (twice) it was HO focussed but scenic materials and layout details were plentiful in every scale. If it's as good a show as it was, you definitely should go.

It's always worth the time to go to the GSMTS. O guage is represented well and , and as others on this forum have said there are plenty of scenery vendors such as Scenic Express, crusader Rail Hobbies, Harrison Trains and Scenes, and some custom structure builders.  Lots of modular club layouts as well in all gauges.  I'll be heading up there tomorrow morning!

Lover the years I've been able to find some great rarities there such as my Baltimore and Annapolis SW 8 and a matching caboose.

FYI - the winter show is usually the best too!!

After seeing this post last night, I decided to drive the 1 1/2 hours from Northern Virginia up to Timonium.  I had been to Greenberg shows up there a few times, but never GSMTS.  Boy am I glad I went!  Way different than Greenberg, and exponentially better.  Many vendors, many layouts, many private tables.  Good mix of EVERYTHING.  Yes, there was lots of HO, but there was a lot of other stuff.  Tools, scenery, books, lots of running layouts in all gauges, etc.  It's not York, but I'd definitely go back - well worth the drive.  I found two MTH PS2 engines at a FANTASTIC price - Best trainshow buys I've every had, IMO.

Got there early and there was a decent line at 9am when they opened.   Left to the car to drop off purchases twice, and there were lines at 10am and 11am.  Looked like continuous streams of people coming in.

I'm not a Lionel pre-war/post-war fanatic, so maybe that's why I liked this so much - I didn't see an overwhelming amount of it like I see at York.

There was a good amount of of AF/S, IMO, but I skip those tables, too.

Skipped on a PS1 engine that was priced right and I wanted to make a non-powered dummy out of it, then went back and it was gone.

National Capital Trackers were there, along with DC Area Independent Hi-Railers, which I didn't know about previously.

Was there with Andy. Always a fun day. Leave Pittsburgh at 4:30. Breakfast at the Clock dinner in York then on to the show. Back of the car full of stuff stopped for dinner   at the Hillside. Stopped for Pie at the Summit Dinner  back  home by 10pm.

Found my set of Menard WWII Nose Art cars on thee porch. They are very nice.

We like to make this trip every year. Always  find many things to bring home. So glad the weather was good for our trip.

The winter show is always their largest.  I went on Saturday. There was plenty of pre-war, post-war, modern 3-rail, and AF to keep you entertained.  You can get some nice buys, especially from HO dealers who want to unload "those Lionel trains."

It's a much better show than Greenberg.  The show is open today (Sunday) 10-4.

As part of the Trackers, I can say I had a fantastic time. It was our first time at this show, and I hope we come back! Attendance Saturday I heard was around 5,000, and over 1,000 today. Lots of people to talk to, and lots of questions answered. I think we may have recruited some new members, too. I did get some photos, maybe if they are OK I'll post later. For now, a short clip of the action is here.  Thanks again are due to Gunrunner John, who upgraded my K-Line TCA Daylight with 4 chuffs/revolution, improved smoke unit, and cruise control.
