Anyone see this completed bay auction for a Lionel 300 switcher? Looks like a bashed Lionel 41 diesel switcher chassis with small steam loco body attached. Sold for North of $200. I wonder what make the body is?

The body was modified from one of the many non scale Pennsy 0-6-0 B6's Lionel has produced since prewar times. The obvious splicing is at the front of the Belpaire firebox. The box mid way on the left running board dates the body a bit later than prewar. That feature was added to give clearance for later motors. Below the running boards appears to be all 41 switcher as suspected.
I actually like the end results. For a fantasy engine it looks well proportioned. I can't imagine how it might propel itself without a steam dome and steam chest.

I saw it and was going to bid on it - I may have - but when I saw what was happening to the price I quickly walked away. It is a very appealing piece, in its way. I suspect that the superstructure was a Lionel 0-4-0 (that locomotive - a version of it - is still in production, and, indeed, a version of it appears in the latest Lionel catalogue) rather than an 0-6-0, but that's nit-picking, as it was certainly one or the other.
The price baffles me; the piece can't possibly appeal to the "purist" collectors out there - it's 2 PW pieces sliced, diced and joined. As for us scratch-bashers, we like this sort of thing, but, to me, it's $50 curiosity.
