3 favorites of mine is S.F. 5011 BIG steamer 2-10-4 , S.F. 2347 F-3's ABA set and Southern 1039 NW-2 switcher. Don't need any more engines.

In an early TM video Terry Johnson, a layout owner in the Lansing, MI area, noted his favorite train was the next one he was going to buy.

My variation on that thought is my favorite engine is the last one I bought.  Currently, that honor is held by an MTH Soo Line GP9.

I have several "favorites" such as a Lionel GG-1, two  F3s,  several 2065s, all 4 S2 Lionel turbines, a 646, 736  and my top favorite is a 1915 cast iron Ives my late wife bought me as a surprise more than 25 years ago. Runs like a champ.  The more the merrier !

I grew up lovin the Lionel F3s. Steam would be the Hudson, then anything NYC.

I think that this question has been asked millions of times, but don't worry Everytime I see this type of thread, I see everyone has different answers than before. I am one of those, I got three maybe more or all my stuff but mainly my Railking Galloping Goose, and My Lionmaster Challenger and Big Boy.

It is hard to pick just one favorite engine, but the order would be 1. 736, 2. 2046, just picked it up yesterday, 3. 2055. All are Postwar, and all are like new. I don't know what I did to deserve such great friends at the train shop I go to, but I am thankful for them. 

For me it's a tossup between the 726 and 2340. The former because of the detail including the Baldwin wheels, and the latter because of its robustness and pulling power:

I love my  Tuscan 2340. The only problem is that when i have it on the track i hate to take it off !!   My 726 is an RR  and not a strong puller plus a little noisy.  I have a 2056 which is close, good runner but noisy too. In my group I have a 646 which I like.

Where to start?

Like i have said before LOL. I like all my engines or i would not buy them.  

My Marx #999, like that of my childhood I literally ran the wheels off. My Lionel cheap set 0-8-0 kit bashed into a 2-8-0, soon to be followed by another bashed into a 2-8-2....hey, what can I do?  These have correct coal fired Vanderbilt tenders.                          My next favorite has not been made...and as a small Bachmann sized two truck Healer is stuck in my imagination.

No contest!  Even though I probably own more F3 units, it's the GG1, hands down.  Scale or traditional, prototypical or fantasy.  Second place goes to most anything electric from PRR.

Favorite engine?  Whew that's tough!    You didn't say real, model, gauge or even if I own one so I'll give you all of them! 

1. Real railroad equipment steam:  Berkshires of the Lima/Nickel Plate Road variety.  (Although light mikados are a close second.)
2. Real railroad equipment traction:  The P1a's of the Cleveland Union Terminal.
3. Real railroad equipment diesel:  Norfolk & Western tuscan Geeps.
4. Prewar standard gauge:  385E
5. Prewar O gauge:  700E
6. Postwar:  736 or 726
7. Modern:  Lionel 4014 Big Boy

I don't own any of these by the way.

2332 GG1 The closest to it would be the 2330 GG1

I must admit, the 2332 GG1 was my first Lionel model engine. At present I have the Century Club 1 version....And this one....

I have to agree with Scale Rail...most definitely the Southern Pacific 2472.  Matt

Real diesel locomotive, ATSF F7 307L -- a good-looking, smooth-running engine.

Real steam locomotive, ATSF 3776 Class 4-8-4 with tapered rods -- a racehorse and a brute in one locomotive.

O Gauge diesel, MTH SP Baldwin AS-616 -- reliable and "bulletproof", and AS-616 is an oddball from my boyhood.

O Gauge steam, Pecos River Brass ATSF "final rebuild" 3450 Class 4-6-4 -- love those big LFM drivers!

My favorite is Reading T-1 2124 in her Iron Horse Rambles paint scheme. This Lionel T-1 (6-18006; 1989) was custom painted and detailed by Reading Steam Guru, Wowak, and J. D. S. Limited Productions

Ives 1694 set, made by Lionel in 1932 and by MTH Tinplate Traditions

Here is a meet with a MTH Premier T-1 pulling SGL Lines 2000-series semistreamlined ("blimp") cars
