1531R controller vs. stop station

I purchased a Lionel 132 stop station to control my passenger train. I am running an older MTH Rail King GG1 or a new Williams EP-5 (everything is conventional and I will be rewiring the Williams to series). I find that in order to get the stop station to work, I need to have the track voltage at such a high level that the trains race around the layout. I then purchased a Lionel 1531R controller to replace the stop station, but need a relay between the 1531R and the track power. I'm at a loss as to what type of relay I need and where to get it (Radio Shack?). Any help would be appreciated. (Please keep it simple as my electrical knowledge is very basic)
