I am only 71, growing up in this community in NC which was primarily agricultural, and  was about 54% retired, the vast majority from other states, and now I am in my  retirement years, thankfully in my own home.  I have observed a trend in retirees that have moved here over the years.  We had a place called the 'Opportunity House'. In it was a machine shop, a wood working shop, sewing, quilting, painting, pottery, just about every hobby that needed equipment, the same equipment many relocating retirees had to sell off when they moved here from where ever, was available for them to use.  We even had 4 hobby shops in a town-and county- of only 50,000 people. In the last 30 years we have shrunk to one hobby shop, a very good one, and the Opportunity House use dwindled, and it finally closed.  We have a bumper crop of retirees here, but they don't seem to do anything.  One trend I did notice though, many say that in their home town, they did this or that, were a member of this club or that, are tired of being a mover or shaker and now they want to just sit back and enjoy, and sometimes tell you what you are doing wrong.  We do have an impressive HO layout featuring this area and the Saluda Grade in the train station run by a local club.  I can envision a day when a retired Generation Z person passes on in this area, and  the only thing they will have to dispose of is his game machine.
