Traveling south from CT to Brunswick MD area for 3 nights next week (4/16-19) before heading up to York Friday morning. Place we are renting is on Sandy Hook Rd in Knoxville MD and is literally across the street from the CSX tracks and a moderate hike on the Appalachian Trail to Harpers Ferry.  We wanted to take a day trip up to Paw Paw and photograph trains going through parts of the Magnolia Cutoff. Any tips, info on the roads to take once in Paw Paw? In looking at Google Maps there appears to be maze of roads that traverse the area near the track. Probably will purchase a Delorme Gazetteer tonight. In doing a Google search found a lot of dead end links to railfanning the area, so figured I'd ask here. Thanks.

The Delorme Gazetteer is indispensable if you want to railfan in unfamiliar territory.

It's great for finding paved roads that take you near to (or alongside) railroad tracks.  The dirt roads are there too, but there is much more latitude in what kind of a road it actually is.  It could be a nice, graded, road, surfaced with gravel or caliche, or it might be two ruts through the grass and mud.  Also ranch gates are sometimes surprises.

Overall, though, I highly recommend Delorme.  Out west here, you can be a very long way from civilization on 40 miles of bad road, if you are looking for photo sites, and Delorme can help you return to town.  Probably it is similar in the hollows of Appalachia.
