Anybody incorporate LARGE ships into your layout?

A cruise ship would be way cool!  I'd do similar if I had the space.  I enjoy quirky little vignettes on folks' layouts.  I have an O scale Jaws and Captain Quint but nowhere to put it.  Best I've got is Marilyn Monroe standing on the subway grate in Seven Year Itch.

I did on my old layout.  The layout was torn down a few years ago but I am actually going to start rebuilding this week.  Unfortunately the new layout I will be able to display the car ferry but there will not be enough room to have a yard and be able to load and unload it.  

Marylin Monroe works for me.  On a ship is just fine.

At one time, I had such plans, but I just don't have enough room, and my plans changed.  I build ship models, too, so I laid in the plans and some of the materials to put a waterlined 1/48 scale WWII minelayer together.  I may still build the ship one day. . . .

I saw a mall Christmas display layout around 30 years ago that had a huge (6ft long) GI Joe aircraft carrier in a harbor scene. It may not have been scale, but it was definitely impressive. And of course, there was the admittedly undersized ship in the Rochester NY P.A.L. layout from the Bantam Lionel book in the 50's.

There was a full pier on the starboard side.  The ship is still there, as is the layout table but I stripped that a few years back to build a new layout which would continue to use the ship.  However the table at the moment is summer storage for my Disneyland modules so layout reconstruction remains on hold.  Oh, and neither Darth nor the G scale layout are there either at the moment.

Several years ago, I got a model catalog, boats, ships, cars, etc. One of the ships was a model in HO scale of the Edmund Fitzgerarld, I think the item said it was over 4 ft. long. The price was just over $200, and foolishly I didn't buy one. I have never seen another one since, and if I find it in an antique shop or show, it's mine. That might last me longer than I live. Just joking. 

I'd have a better chance putting my layout on a large ship than I would putting a large ship on my layout.

Pennytrains- If I had a life size Darth Vader in my basement like you did, no matter how many times I went down there, I know it would scare the living you know what of of me each and every time! LOL!

Interesting for sure, however, even a moderate size ship would require a great deal of waterfront in "O" scale.  See the post of the 4' long "HO" Ed Fitz above.

That ship looks great Michael! My "boating Grandfather" (vs the " train Grandpa") used to build them. Smaller ones in bottles too.

I'm glad to see JD get a post in too,lol. I was going to link to that thread too. He must be thinking trains again with the Avondale show happening today.. Its our largest...and I'm too sick with a cold or maybe flu for the second or third year in a row. I don't go to shows and spread stuff ..sigh. It wipes me out to travel twenty miles, then walk it anyhow I guess.

These lakeboats, including the Edmund Fitzgerald, are in HO scale, and are by a group that sets up at Trainfest and WGH when its in town. They would need to be twice as large for an O Scale layout. You'd really need some real estate for that!

When l saw this post, l thought somebody else got in a Micro Mark catalog.  It has 1/50 models of a tug that could move a car barge, and a fishing boat. These are much smaller than a cruise ship.  In Portland, Me. the two foot runs right along the water with cruise ships docking.  Is there even a near 1/50 cruise ship kit?2

The second may be a hallucination......but, I seem to remember Phil Klopp has done spreads in the magazine recreating a classic pages in the Lionel 58 catalog.....maybe someone can help me out.......I know he's done a picture of the Virginian rectifier page........I seem to remember this page, too:

One of the fellows in the Chicago area who hosts an open house every year for O Scale March Meet, has a very large ore boat on his layout.    I think it is based on the Edmund Fitzgerald, but is shortened some.   It is about 8-10 feet long I think.     It is very impressive.
