The description in the catalog and online are pretty sparse, so I am hoping someone who actually has one of these engines can answer 2 questions I have.

1) Does this locomotive have the whistle steam smoke effect (catalog does not mention)?

2) Does this locomotive have the variable ashpan glow feature (again, no mention)?

I'd appreciate any help an owner could provide! Thanks much,

I wouldn’t call this description, from Lionel’s website, “sparse.” Usually, if a marketable feature isn’t mentioned, it’s because the locomotive doesn’t have it.

David,

The SP mallet has a oil tender not coal so if Lionel did them correctly there should be no ash pan glow. The Western Maryland mallet has a coal tender so it has the ash pan glow.

Yes; glad that some notice - even know - these things. Technically the SP loco should have small white "flickers" from the oil burners in bottom of the firebox, but a yellow/reddish "glow" - certainly not.

(Of course, Lionel did not change the tooling to remove the ash pan detail - something an oil-burner would not have had - no ash. But considering that the entire "SP" version is mostly not SP, this is a nit too small to pick.)

Accurate model? No. Convincing enough to enjoy? Sure.
