Diecast Direct has a set of three VW “sambas”, whcih my be what Paul is thinking of: https://www.diecastdirect.com/...uct/18158/Volkswagen.

As a VW fan, I bought the set a while back but the buses are in different colors than these.  Sorry, I can’t post photos at this time.

TomlinsonRun...yes, I believe DD is the seller of the 3 unit set now that you mention it.  I buy from others also, but DD has been a  great source for diecast autos and trucks, etc.  for me.  Thanks for refreshing my memory, and thanks for providing the link....

Lee...one of the diecast sellers has a 3 set package of 60's vintage VW's...can't search it now, but if you or any others are interested, I'll find the link.  I recall the price was reasonable...

Paul. Thanks for the complement on the Mack it’s one of my favorites of the Mack Cabovers I guess because Dad drove one. Thanks for the information on tbe VWs I’ll go check them out.

A  Priestman  power shovel by Corgi.   The bulldozer is something I bought off the Bay ... made of plastic and looks cool enough ... reminds me of dozers I saw as a kid growing up in the 50s ...  so it fits in with my era I'm modeling, the Transition Era.

The Corgi power shovel is a piece that is of particular sentimental value  because one of my English uncles sent it to me for Christmas.  He would send a Corgi vehicle every Christmas and I'd immediately put it on my train layout.  I also have a Corgi Land Rover pickup truck and Corgi horse trailer that he sent me and they are also on my layout today.  One year he sent a Corgi double decker bus, which I thought was super cool!  Somehow that bus was lost over the years ... bummer!

Here's a couple of VW drivers filling up after the weekend rush....25 cents / gal for regular and the "Vette" guy will pump high test at 28 cents / gal!  The redheaded gal by the red VW does not know at the time about her future connections with model railroading...lol

Back in 1965 pumped Ethyl at 18-cents and Regular at 11-cents at the "GASTOWN' station worked at.  And the "Old Man"(owner)gave us workers there 3-cents off!  My 426 CI dodge four speed  with a Carter quad liked those prices.

Mark - very nice looking VW bugs!!  What year is the one with the split back window?  I'm thinking early 50's?

You are right, Pat.  Derbugmeister.com says 1939-53 http://derbugmeister.com/splits/splits.html

Dad served in the Army in 1952-53.  The first one he saw was in Germany when he was stationed on the West-East border.  He was surprised to see the driver stop it mid-hill on a snow covered road, thinking he wouldn’t get started up the hill again.  Then one of the other guys told him it was rear engine.  After his discharge, he started seeing them here in rural Western Pennsylvania.

Thanks for der bugmeister info Mark!  Got to love those split rear windows!  I remember seeing those split rear window Bugs as a kid in the 50s/60s.  The split window enhances the bug's character IMHO.

Neat that your father saw his first split rear window Bug in Germany then began noticing them when he returned home.

Mark, here's a very rare VW beetle, almost as rare as a Hudson! These were the VW Volkswagen Type 14A, or Hebmuller cabriolet 1949–1953. Basically the same time period as the split window Beetle. I've looked for scale models but haven't found one yet in the desired scale. Is that a cool looking VW or what.

Okay so we've headed down the VW rabbit hole so I went out to the garage to dig up the box with my VWs.  I have one of those MPC Fundemensions Great Northern 3 level car carriers and was always looking for some cars for a load.  I tried some of those plastic Dimestore Dreams cars but they were too big. One day I came across some Hot Wheels Extreme? cars at a LHS that were going cheap and they would definitely g with O gauge trains.  Among them were some Volkswagens which looked like they may fit on that car carrier. I took them home tried them out and they fit perfectly.

IMG_1131IMG_1132IMG_1133

So we have two '58 Panel Bus and a '52 split window Beatle.  They sat on the top level. The middle level had the two red '69 Variants (station wagons)and the white '52 Karmann Ghia, the bottom level had the two white '69 Fast Backs and the black '52 Karmann Ghia. As I said, they fit perfectly and the Big Sky Blue car looked fantastic.  I couldn't figure out how to separate the levels without damage so securing the cars was tricky.  I used wax meant to hold candles in place and it worked fine as long as the car remained upright.  The ultimate problem became weight and center of gravity.  The car definitely didn't like high speed 0-27 curves.  So today the car is empty and I guess I'll have to have a VW dealership in town.

TomlinsonRun RR, I don't know if these Ghias are actually scale but like I said they look fine around my trains and other vehicles.

This Bud's for you!   I have two Budweiser trucks by Corgi which make up my entire Budweiser trucking fleet.   I also have two K line woodside scale reffers to compliment the trucks.   My Dad's favorite beer was Budweiser ( not mine ... my taste buds wildly dance to micro brews ) so the Budweiser trucks and reffers are a tip of the hat to Dad.  C1331309-44C9-43D4-95BC-07AFA0B279B1Bud now on tap in Patsburg

A total mix of manufacturers, purchased everywhere from train shows, drug stores, dollar stores, Walmart, Target, hobby shop just about anywhere toy cars cans be found.  There's some Welley, Road Champs, Yat Mings.  The El Camino is a Hot Wheels.

Patrick nice looking Mack B I don’t recall you posting these but I’m glad you did.

I have had a lot of VW's I have picked up over the years when I see a deal or something interesting. Many still in boxes some all over the layout. Have been wanting a good home for them all. I picked up a (cheap) beat up, damaged in shipping,  Menards Valley Motors with a broken turn table and roof caved in. I  was able to take out the motor and repair the gears. Then printed some brick pattern with Model Builder Software to cover some scratches on the side of the building and give it a different look. Covered the cracks in the roof edge so you do not see the sign light coming through. Added an LED spot light for the rotating vehicle on the roof. Got a VW key fob logo from the local dealer for free and hung this with some pipe for a sign. Found some wood letters from Michaels painted them silver for a dealer sign mounted on wood beams. Added some more interior detail; service bay and sales room. Drilled more holes to mount VW's. I put the 5 Ford trucks that came with the Menards building with my Lionel Ford dealer. Then hunted down all the VW's of a similar era aiming for 1960, with earlier models for the used car lot. Opened boxes long waiting for a place. Here it is on the carpet kids layout for now. Will have to do some work to clear some buildings for enough room to fit it on the main layout. Fondly recall our VW when I was a kid and learned to drive on our Beetle. Still have a lot of VW's on the layout but they are all newer then my 1960 dealer. Enjoy seeing all your VW pics!

Richie. That Rig is Beautiful! That’s for building it just like Backie Skaggs Rig. I wish his son was still living to see this. I always enjoyed going to his house and seeing these 2 trucks he had. My favorite was Truck No.4 that was the one Blackies son drove. Thanks for sharing.

A family was driving over the mountains on holiday with a full load, luggage rack on the roof in this nice little VW beetle split window. Stopped by for service at the VW dealer as they said their radiator was boiling over on the mountain pass!!!

Picked up a couple of more VW's this nice one with the roof rack and Blue Yellow pickup. They had some really nice VW vans/busses but have enough, though was really tempted.  https://www.yomacarmodel.ca/collections/volkswagen

Nice job on the matching trailer for the Mack Bulldog. I have one of these the IXO trucks are great very detailed great prices. Wish they offered some 1/43 trailers unpainted to match. Was hoping that MTH might put out some of their trailers as separate order items without the flat cars. Would be nice to get some white  or silver trailers to decal or paint up to match the IXO trucks. The MTH 48 foot trailers are very close to the dimensions of the old AMT 1/43 model trailers.

Also when I built up my VW dealer and put together my VW car/truck fleet and then went to post them on this thread, I had no idea till I looked over the page that there had been some VW interest over the last few pages, a timely coincidence.

The gas station is busy this sunny Friday afternoon with folks tanking up for the weekend!  The redheaded kid in the VW bus isn't happy with the wait and gestures to the gas station attendant, as his father stands by taking in the sights.

The long line extends over the "main line" where the surfer stands patiently by his old man's 1948 Chevrolet Fleetmaster "woody," with surf board on top.  His surfer girl friend lifts the back window to reach for a cold one...by all accounts, a fun weekend is ahead at the shore

Thanks coach...great observation!  The line is moving, but the "kid" is still showing his discontent.  The "surf guy" made it across the tracks and is next in line behind the VW bus.  The "Vette" guy has finished pumping his gas, but appears to be idling for no apparent reason, but knows the "Fleetmaster" can't make the turn into his pump lane, so he's taking his time...could he be hoping for a nod from the lady driving the red VW??

Paul. that light green 1953-1961 Mercedes "Coupe" is a rare find, as most were Sedans! I'll take a guess it's either a 190E or a 220SE. That body style is a rare find nowadays for the real deal, especially the Coupe and Convertible. When I was in High School, seems like eons ago, a good friends Mom had a 1959 220SE Convertible with a manual 4 speed column shifter. Brings back memories when his mom would let him take it for a spin!

Where did you find that, what looks like 1/43 scale, diecast Mercedes?

Great pictures with dialog by the way!

Scott, it's MB 220SE...I believe a '58?  It's a 1/43 Vitesse diecast...should still be some around for sale at the usual "diecast" forum sponsors here...thanks for your comments!

Here's a couple of pics from the "Benz Rally" on North Main last summer sponsored by the local MB dealer.  Notice three hardtops and two convertibles...nice looking units!  There well be more summer rallies coming in July

Well guys here is my offering today. The darn Santa Fe box truck was going threw town a little fast and rolled over, The fire department was on scene to check everyone out and do traffic control till the police showed up. Well they called for a wrecker and Santa Fe didn't want to spend the money so then send a yard tractor out to see if they could roll it back on its wheels and just tow it home with a chain! LOL

I wanted some O Scale 1930s era tractor-trailers for my layout so I designed, printed and assembled my own custom ones!

Auburn Rubber Style GMC 1937 CoE [3)

I decided to focus on the 1930s, my favorite automobile era. I designed a truck based on the 1937 GMC CoE, the very first of the cab-over-engine style semis, in Fusion 360.

Auburn 1937 GMC CoE render

I printed out several trucks and trailers in sturdy ABS filament. They're very easy to print although the trailers suck up a lot of material.

IMG_20220614_051512417

To give the trucks a classic 1930s dimestore toy look, I added rubber O-ring tires to the models. I mostly settled on simple paint schemes based on what I found in period truck advertisements such as this. The hubs are also 3D printed and the axles are made from steel escutcheon pins pressed in to sections of rubber tubing.

GMC Coe 1937 closeups [5)

For trailers, I started off designing a car hauler. This doesn't match a specific historic setup but it is closely based on a period toy by the Auburn Rubber Toy Company. I've added some vintage rubber-molded sedans from the Sun Rubber company as a load.

Auburn Rubber Style GMC 1937 CoE [5)

I also designed a streamlined Fruehauf trailer. This is directly based on the Fruehauf Warehousemans Van from the late 1930s.

Auburn Rubber Style GMC 1937 CoE [2)

Keep on trucking everybody!

Another day at the corner of Summer and North Main Streets...traffic is heavy with folks headed to the shore for what is forecast to be a "steamy weekend!"  Gas is up a cent to .25 cents / gal before the 4th of July weekend, but the price hike hasn't stopped the surfers and beach goers from heading east to the shore.  The traffic jam isn't helped by "Sid Brown" and his DeSoto breaking down in the middle of Summer Street.  The "law' is observing the weekend show, and it will only get more interesting as day turns to night!

The picture at the bottom here is edited with the "Zeke" effect as mentioned by "Ted" earlier this year...I finally got the time to find it an apply it...many years ago, I knew of a guy named "Zeke" in my line of work...I wonder what he's up to these days and if he's still with us...

I was wondering if anyone can help identify the cars in the photo in the link below and if they would be available in 1/43 scale??  I am building this unique train a doodlebug that pulled 2 flat cars. I was going to try to replicate all the vehicles in this photo as reasonably close as possible. But in particular I wanted to do the first car as close to possible (BC Electric car)? Photo on the NMRA website. Click on the Auto Cars and click on X to view a large view.  Just finished repainting a MTH Doodlebug to match and next will try to build some flat cars that match and add the cars to match the on line photos. In real life the train ran a short shuttle to a small community down the lake a ways that did not have road access at the time. There was a Hydro electric plant here and the first car is for the BC Electric company that ran the Hydro project.

OK, I’ll go out on a limb … I couldn't quite tell, but it looks like the yellow car has a large chrome ring centered on the front grill.  Without researching body lines, it immediately made me think “Studebaker” (and then “Tucker”).

Agreed, the other models should be easy to find — especially the white VW, as this thread recently showed .

Gotta love those doodlebugs; have fun with this project!

I added a "B card" gas rationing sticker to the windshield, removed the side windows, and then added a Tennessee 1943 plate to the back end.

Okay, so it's more than lightly weathered, but I like how it turned out.

I also like how it looks parked:

Scott, that's a sharp'50 Ford coupe in maroon color...what brand diecast is it?

Paul, my 1950 Maroon Ford Coupe is a First Response Replicas, and I think I paid $9 for it. I'm not sure First Response are still around. However, I believe American Heritage has the same model, too. I couldn't find any reasonably priced 1950 models, but there are more 1949 (same body) available by Vintage Vehicles and ETRL on eBay.

Sometimes it looks maroon, in lower light it looks dark brown. LoL

Thanks for the responses in my quest to match up the vehicles on the flat cars in the photo on this NMRA website; the Auto Cars image; (the images in my post are of my painted doodlebug and a quick mock up of what flat cars with cars  might look like)  http://www.7divpnr.ca/node/368

I took the photos to my train club today and some knowledgeable folks identified  the vehicles as follows; 1957 Ford Meteor Rideau 500 2 door, 1957 Cadillac 4 door, 1954 or so Willies Pickup -( look at that load in the back will be fun to model), 1957 Buick 4 door, The station wagon I can not figure out note it has a split windshield and looks like a 2 door something like a ford or Studebaker from the 1950's ?? The last car looks like a Chevy or Pontiac 1950 4 door. Any suggestions on finding similar 1/43 models to these vehicles would be welcome. Will try to get close to this photo for vehicles.

As for the flat cars as they will be 1/48 scale carrying 1/43 models I will have to build them a bit longer then they look for the scale difference.

@Don Winslow posted:

I'm certain these are models of a 1:1 scale car you have. I think everyone has either bought, wanted or wished for a model of a car they own or owned in the past.

I'd love a good soft-top late 80s Suzuki Samurai in 1/43 scale even though I could never use it on my layout due to the era differences. As I have a real 1944 Willys MB, I have several models on my 40s-themed layout.

@coach joe posted:

Suzuki Samurai?  Did you ever "fripit ova"?

Nah, the issue with that was, they didn't roll any more than a Jeep would, but they marketed them as a 'sports vehicle' to younger people who didn't realize it had a high center of gravity. A guy I later met who worked at a dealer which sold them said that most rollovers were from 20-something college girls who got one because it looked cool and treated it like a lower-slung car.

Anyone familiar with vehicles of that type (which I very much was) would never come close to rolling one.

I am working on building the 2 flat cars to match the photo, long enough to be able to hold 3 - 1/43 vehicles on each, yet look like the flat cars in the 1958 photo here;  http://www.7divpnr.ca/node/368

I went hunting around my layout and display shelves and found a suitable collection of vehicles to reasonably match the vehicles in the original 1958 photo.   In place of the Cream colored BC Electric badged 1957 Ford Meteor I am substituting a 1949 Ford Coupe by Ertl I added BC Electric decals. (The BC Electric diesel engines were done in a similar yellow saves me a repaint to the BCE bus / car cream color) In place of the 1957 Cadillac 4 door I found a similar shape of a 1958 Chevrolet Bel Air by Neo . For the Willies dark green pickup 1950's; I found some on e-bay over seas but rather pricy + the shipping costs, The Neo model available looks very similar in the dark green with spare tire and side stacks; will keep looking for this if any cheaper ones show up, but for now from my collection I am substituting with a 1946 Dodge Power Wagon by Matchbox looks rough and tough like the Willies. For the 1957 Buick 4 door I have a 1957 Buick Roadmaster convertible by Neo. I  could not identify the station wagon 5th vehicle in the photo but looks to be a 1940/50's 2 door station wagon, I am using a 1949 Ford Woody wagon 2 door by Road Champs; it looks like the car in the photo, a similar shape. The last car on the flat car is 1950 or 51 Chevrolet or Pontiac, this I was best able to match with a similar color 1950 Chevrolet 4 door by Solido.  Here are the cars on Weaver flat cars.
