Narrow Gauge and Shortine Gazette had an article on the Bell locomotive, which used technology from the Stanley Steamer automobile.  I had never heard of this loco, but am familiar with mechanics of the auto. There is no room in a car for a boiler the size of even a tiny loco, as many Bells were.  However, a larger boiler made what sounds like the car engines efficiently power the loco. The two cylinder engine was directly geared to one axle with power transmitted to second driver set by side rods. With simple side rods, this looks like an easy model, that might start with a Bowser or other birney chassis.
