I'm certain that is a common knowledge situation but we are brand new to Legacy having obtained a previously owned unit from a friend here on the Forum. The batteries get awfully hot when charging although the lights switch from red to green after a short while when the Cab2 is placed in the base which I must assume means that the charge cycle is complete. With the old Ni-cads, that was a sure sign of overcharging and damage to the batteries. What is the situation with these newer batteries please?

Suggestions?

I have been using a energizer smart charger along with energizer rechargeable batteries and have had excellent results. The energizer batteries last for a much longer period of time than the ones supplied by Lionel. I keep a spare set of batteries that are fully charged when the time comes and swap them out.

Timely question Paul. I just picked up a Legacy Unit from a forum member. I noticed the batteries in the handheld were not coming up to full charge so I put in some NiMH batteries that came with the Apple computer charger (AA batteries for mice and keyboard).

Worked like a champ and showed full charged. Anyone interested, the Apple charger comes with 6 AA NiMH batteries for about 30 bucks.
