Can Marx cars be easily converted for use with regular couplers?

I have just carefully cut off the truck and put on the lionel/mth truck with coupler.

Depending on the Marx truck and coupler design, some have attempted to fit a postwar coupler and base plate to the truck axles, similar to how the conversions were done on the old Scout cars. Others convert the truck on one end of a Marx car to make a transition car, and leave the rest of the cars as is.

Here are three ways I've used on Marx tilt and knuckle couplers.  It's a lot easier than trying to put a Marx coupler on a Lionel car!

The bottom photo shows an adaptation of the Lionel base plate.

Yep. Easy. Have done it. Get a PW Lionel knuckle coupler unit (available on daBay, parts

houses, train shows). The truck wheelbase is the same for Marx and Lionel freight trucks.

Remove the Marx coupler and spring, then bend the Lionel unit's tabs over the Marx axles

(just like Lionel axles). Done.

This does NOT apply to the Marx 3/16" scale trucks. The wheelbase is shorter, as these

items are S scale/O gauge. 

Marx had an adaptor coupler that would fit on their 3/16 cars, by simply revolving

the tilt coupler under the body and snapping the Marx knuckle assembly over the

axles.   I have one, but may have used it on the rear of a tender so that tender could

be used for trains of either cars.  FINDING one probably won't be easy.

Ive done that with Marx four wheel truck tank cars and replaced them with Lionel trucks so I can pull them with my Lionel equipment.
