I have had some trains (quite a few) on display for twenty years on a shelf (can it be that long!) without protection. They have developed a film on them of a bit of what seems to be oil and dirt. I am sure this question has been asked before, but it was in regards to painting. I want to clean them but avoid removing paint, decals or value. Any suggestions for a protocol to make them near new?

I found baby wipes/handi wipes are the best for cleaning them. Gentle on the finish, but durable, not like a paper towels. Doesn't leave lint or bits of paper behind either. Easy to fold into cracks and crevices too!
Absolutely the best method I found.
I would think some of the questions should be:
1) How old are the models, i.e. prewar, or postwar, or modern stuff?
2) Are there any smokers in the house?
3) Is the interior environment VERY dusty, or VERY high humidity?
