I do not try to fix the imperfections.  I do sand it pretty well.  The first coat is heavy body acrylic, then an I/A wash then airbrush.  There is a seam in the middle of the smaller arches but the bridge is going on the back side of the layout.  I might have tried to fill that if this piece was slated for close-view.

Nice bridge.  I also don't smooth and sand out all imperfections - not necessary, at least with many.  

 

I've had good results using spackling paste to cover up and smooth out imperfects and rough foam surfaces.  I like the stuff that goes on pink and dries white - easy to know when you can sand and paint.  Cheap and easy to use.
