I am going to get back to operating a layout and asked a ? about my old base .. I am sort of confused why I can not find any 990 sets .. all the sponsors and other dealers say not till 2014 or till the  end of it.

Didn't Lionel make this unit for a while now I thought since 2005 or something like that..?

Is there a different number for the Legacy unit other than 990 .

Will I still need anything like a base to run TMCC ?

What are Legancy operators using for a hand held  unit  operation  currently..

Will I still need a trainmaster  to run my old non TMCC equipment Thanks again DANiel

there are many threads on this already.... I suggest you search...

however the gyst of it is that Lionel rejected a batch of them for inferior parts/build quality.  So yes, they have been hard to find.....

If you want one i suggest posting in the wanted to buy section on here.... I needed a 2nd for a gift and someone was VERY helpful in making my neighbor's Xmas work.

After I posted I searched and BOY did I find a lot of info.. Just can not understand why!!! I remember years ago showing the wide base and thought maybe oneday!

Very disappointing to say "the least"

Anyways what I like to know is there a difference in a held had cab-1 vs a cab1L  and if so what is it and what is the difference is waiting for a unit out of the 990 set ..Thanks ...DANiel

The CAB-1L/BASE-1L set is basically a new and improved CAB1/BASE1 set with a couple of features for Legacy.  It is also compatible with the Legacy base, so you can use the CAB-1L with a Legacy base when you get one.

The old CAB1/BASE1 looks like the new version, but they're totally different under the skin.  They operate on different frequencies and a CAB1 cannot talk to the BASE-1L and the CAB-1L can't talk to the old TMCC BASE1.

I guess if we read between the lines here, it's a statement on how fast the technology treadmill can move beyond it's ability to continue making items and replacement parts for things that have been in production for 5-10 years.

Regarding the Lionel 990 set... I honestly don't know what to believe anymore.  The "corporate party line" about Lionel refusing/rejecting inferior quality parts may be true, but it also sounds a bit too convenient as well... placing the blame fully on overseas manufacturing instead of product planning and forsight.  Gotta put all of this in perspective when we ask questions about new product and are told, "We (i.e., Lionel stateside) don't know until we receive a sample from the manufacturer."

Time will tell.  Meanwhile, unless you find someone willing to sell theirs for a reasonable price, it really is the wild, wild West out there -- even among established dealers.  They smell blood and the 990 sets are fetching premium prices... almost worse than a set of Vision Line tankers with freight sounds!!!

I think you nailed this one Dave.  Funny you mentioned the technology leaps, I was thinking the same thing. Just finished watching Lionel youtube videos and learning about the difference in TMCC, Legacy and Legacy versions.

Not straying away on topic here, but if I was a company and my subcontractor couldn't get the job done, I would be looking at alternate means (read:doing whatever necessary to get my product corrected and delivered to customers).  This has been going on for too long.  Legacy is one of their major products, correct it. People only have so much patience, time is ticking away...

I bought several Legacy engines after returning to the hobby before I learned on this forum about the issue with Legacy systems. That's on me, not blaming anybody but myself.  I'll continue to wait because I refuse to pay the price gouging on E-bay (just looked $695/$1,500) and other sources.

Spoke with the owner of my LHS.  He stated that the shortage will continue through April 2014. His reason for the delay is a bit different than what Lionel has stated publicly. Also said that DCS systems will be hard to come by. Feel bad for those just getting into the hobby only to experience a roadblock in the form of control system availability.

that would be easy if not for all the other much larger companies that want small electronic items, ie: apple, google, Microsoft, Toyota, and so on. also on a much larger scale and most likely are willing to pay a lot more to get the item now!

I agree.  They are in a heck of a mess.

Sure time is ticking away but go ask the "S" gauge guys how it feels to be abandoned. The Chinese factories told them they were no longer interested in building them and they have had virtually no luck finding new factories. It's going o be hard to find anyone that interested in making a few hundred legacy bases when there are 1000's of iPhone and Android devices needing to be built.

Lionel is not stupid, and they know the demand, but its going to be a struggle to find someone to build them. I know it's tough to hear "Be Patient" however unless you want to stress yourself out to no end, it's the best you can do.

The reason for delays are exactly as Lionel explained.  I was involved intimately on this one, the problem was a part obsolescence issue.  We had to approve a substitute which required some adjustment to the design, and test cycles to make sure the product works as expected.  Simple as that, they are in production at this time and will shortly be available.

Thanks to the folks who are patiently waiting, and sorry for the delay.

Hi Santee,
Thanks for the update.
All along I felt that this issue would lead to a hardware modification.

Eventually that LCD screen will not be worth manufacturing due to limited  industry demand.

One of the reasons that I held off buying used or NOS.
Those people buying at inflated prices and others with used controllers should just get used to the idea that the original Cab-2 is just as obsolete as the Cab-1.

And I have been on this site long enough to hear the same people lauding the Cab-1 as the greatest, now pointing out its limitations and bad design regarding speed steps.

What short memories we have.

I may just have to wait a few months longer after the new ones come out and see if it has any issues.

Hi Jon...you posted this back on 12/29/2013 stating that the CAB2 #990 controllers were in production.  Are they currently still in production or have they hit another snag.  I've been waiting since summer of last year for one.

Thanks!

Stan-
