After reading on this forum about "crazing" paint issues on the DAP set back in November, I thought I better look at mine closer. I did find cracking paint on one of my A units. I phoned MTH and spoke with a helpful tech. He wanted me to send it in for replacement. He took the time to find a new one from stock and even called me back to let me know that a swap out was able to be done instead of having to send my shell to China for a repaint. I had a new shell back within a week and a half. I was impressed to see MTH stand behind their product that is over 3 years old. I was required to send in my receipt to prove I was the original owner, which is reasonable. (purchased from Jim's Train shop)
I would still like to get a definite answer on how many of these sets were produced.

Interesting. I also purchased my set from Jim's Train shop. (I wonder if he got a batch with problems.) Approximately one year after purchase I was adding some smoke fluid to the A unit. It was apparently air locked so I blew into the stack (standard operating procedure) and proceded to blow large flakes of the black paint off of the roof.
A call to MTH yielded an RA number for the A's return, a replacement shell was located and my unit was back to me in a very reasonable time.
Point being that this piece was over it's 1 year warranty and MTH took care of it with no questions asked.
I too, wish to express a belated 'thank you' to MTH for excellent service.

RogerW, Wow hard to believe. OK, you have the original receipt, but are you the original owner? If you bought this second hand maybe MTH wont back you on this. If you are the original owner, then maybe you can get your dealer involved. In my opinion, MTH should cover this no matter who owns one with crazing paint. This is clearly a paint issue and not an abuse or mechanical issue due to excessive use. In my case, my shell still looked beautiful. I felt I should get it replaced because even though it looks great now, what will happen to that paint in 5 years? Keep at it and get the dealer involved or go high up on the food chain at MTH. Cant believe they will take care of some people and not others.
Roger I had to have the shell repainted on one of the A units and it was a few months over the warranty, but MTH took care of it. I think maybe a call to Mr Jeff Strank at MTH could help. Don't know who you spoke to about it, but I have found that they are pretty easy to get along with especially if you are civil. There was a problem with the paint on quite a few of these that I know of, give them a call and see if it can't be worked out.
