I need advice on DCS options.

My layout is currently set up at two independent loops. The inner loop is powered by a Lionel CW-180 (the one with the external power brick), and the outer loop with a KW. Both loops are wired as a single blocks, with several feeders running back to the transformers.

The majority of my engines are TMCC and Legacy, so I have a Legacy system installed. I have a handful of MTH engines, and the basic DCS remote commander (the starter set IR remote) wired in passive mode on the outer loop. Two of my MTH engines are properly programed to use the remote commander, and the rest aren't.

I'm considering purchasing another MTH engine, and this is one where I would definitely want better command capabilities. The remote commander was nice starting out, but the fact that it doesn't work on some engines (without needing reprograming from a full DCS system) and the limited capabilities make me want to look for another solution.

What are my options, if any, other than a full DCS system? I've read up on DCS, and a possible complete rewiring (into blocks with the 'star' pattern that is DCS friendly) isn't thrilling me. Is the 'star' wiring pattern strictly necessary? I was looking at the DCS Commander, but that appears to be for the HO crowd (DC output). I also looked at straight DCC systems to take advantage of that capability, but compatibility with Legacy is iffy at best.

Thanks for any advice!

Star wiring is the best possible configuration, but plenty of people have just hooked their TIU to one spot on each loop and it ran without issue.

On my 11x17 loop, i'll occasionally tap the horn button and the loco will sound it twice, since the signal traveled in both directions around the loop, causing the engine to see two commands instead of one. I could cure that with a single insulating pin at the far end of the loop (where the sole feeder is), but that's a minor quirk that I can live with--I don't spam the horn/whistle when I'm operating
