I have updated the TIU'S and now trying to update the remotes.  In Barry's book it says you may have to depress the power button more than once when updating the remote.  My question is how many times.  I have tried and it just keeps telling me to release it, hold it, release it, hold it.  for almost 10 minutes.  The book says it is suppose to take around 4 minutes.  The remote does not power up so that isn't the problem.  Anyone know about how many cycles of on and off there are?  This is the first time I am updating the remotes so I have no idea..

Something's not right.  I've never seen more than twice, as I recall.  By the way, I use a gluing clamp to hold the button down for the prolonged period. When not in use, I keep it clamped to a thick block to tend to weaken the sring.

 

I you have to try multiple times, be sure to power the TIU off and on between tries, and follow the on-screen instructions precisely.

Before you begin n the DCS Remote upgrade...

 

First, make sure that you remove the 1/8" stereo jumper from between the ProtoCast and ProtoDispatch ports of the TIU, and then power the TIU off and then back on again.

 

Second, make sure that the cable between the remote and the TIU's Remote Input port is a 4-conductor cable.

 

Third, inspect the two ports on the TIU and the remote to ensure that there are not any bent or shorted pins.

I have 2 TIU with remotes.  One, mine has 'DCS' splash on top.  The Other, the clubs, has 'Proto 2 Sound'.  after practicing following the process thru and finally getting it right on my equipment wen on to the clubs.  Struggled again getting system to find the com port.  Got that for the TIU and flashed the 6.1 into it.  Then tried to update the remote.  Back to Com port not found.  Observed that on power up the TIU led flashes 15 times.  Could stop the led flashing by power up with audio cable in place.  Finally The remote reports 6.1, BUT shows'INACTIVE ENGINE' AT THE TOP' AND 'INA S/U ALL' at bottom.  changed remote to addr 15.  remote continues to try to find TIU at 1.

Any suggestions?

Look underneath TIU.  If it is Rev G, it will not have a sticker.  All subsequent versions had a sticker.  All TIUs, whatever version, will run 6.1.

Unchange remote address, back to 1.  That is not relevant to this exercise.

Something is wrong if a TIU flashes 15 times.  That's the first issue to cure. 

OK, That is the one that the Club owns.  They had given up on it.  It does have a label 'FCC ID OT8RFMT'.  I am assuming that is the FCC license that was likely issued after production started.   

My unit clearly states Rev13.   What does that tell me relative to being the latest hardware.  I guessing the Rev L with the USB port is the most up to date then.   If we have to replace the club's TIU, I want to ensure we have the latest Rev.

I downloaded the book but haven't searched it for what the number of LED flashes means on startup.  I gather that 15 is catastrophic.  Will come back to that unit later.

The number of flashes is the number that the user has assigned to that particular TIU.  Must be from 1 to 5.  New TIUs come set to 1.  This has nothing to do with the number you assign to a remote.  Each TIU on the layout should have a different number; doesn't matter with the remote.  All my remotes are set to #1.

Yes, I understand.  Interested in what chip.  Opened unit and re-seated RF module.  Some improvement in connectivity, but still led flashing > 5.   I have 20 years working with Telcom and instruments with SMT boards.  I can't personally rework, but may be able to get it done.  HOWEVER suspect it will be better to have it repaired or replaced.  I am retired and would need to go to old contacts.

 

I am just always interested in this aspect.  My experience back with trains in from Nov 2017.  Most people in the area club are afraid of the modern trains.  I am certainly a neophyte, but love to learn.

Won't focus on this, but will likely come back to it now and again.  

Thank you guys for the help.  I now happily have 3 MTH engines running, a conventional post war, and and 4 legacy.  

Have and am reading Barry's book.
