My LHS had a used Legacy for sale. He is asking $250.00.
I don't understand the upgrade or version I should have on the Legacy System?
Should I just buy new?
Thinking about switching from Lionchief to Legacy. No problems with Lionchief plus systems ever just getting a little bored.

For around $300 I've seen brand new, might want to factor that into your thinking.
If you are talking about the Legacy 990 system, I think you can get a brand new system for another $50 or so more. At least some of the forum sponsors here were selling them near that price point recently. Personally, I would prefer to pay the extra for a new set with something like this, rather than save $50 on something used.
Also, Lionel is good about repairing the Legacy 990s, but I don't know if that would apply to one purchased used? I am certain they warranty the sets purchased new.

New it is: Will the new System come with the current version installed or will I have to upgrade the system software myself?
You may have to upgrade something in dealer stock, but the upgrade is pretty painless. If, for some reason, you don't have the serial port equipped machine to connect to the command base, you can usually find someone local to write the upgrade modules for you.
If someone else writes the modules, you'll need two of them, one for the CAB2 and one for the Legacy base. You need at least one writable module to do the upgrades, if you're handy with a soldering iron, this is the cheap way to go.
