Today my wife said, "you need a hobby!" So I spent the day in the basement playing with my trains.  I re-entered most of my "lash-ups" so I could use the new FSV soft key.  I then decided to run my 30-1167 6-8-6 and it wouldn't start up, the passenger cars lit up but nothing from the eng.  I did a "read" on that track, with everything else shut down and got "no eng. found."  The engine is in the remote, so I put it on another track and it started right up, everything functioned flalessly, put it back on track 4 and nothing again. Next I put another PS2 engine on track 4 and it did not start up.  I traced the wires from the TIU to the track and checked the connections on the track, all looked good. I then deleted the PR 6-8-6 and tried to add it back, could not do it on track 4, put it on another track and it added with no issue.  Finally I decided to check the track signal and no signal registered.  I next connected that track to another fixed port on my other TIU, same result, no track signal registered.

I then put a TMCC eng. on the track and it started right up, in conventional, no TMCC to that track, and it ran fine.

I hope this is something simple that I've over looked

I removed all the passenger cars, cleaned the track, looked for anything that could be interfering with the signal and could not find anything.  I tried to run a PS2 engine and still get the eng. not on track and RF out of range messages.

This track is a single loop, no switches, no accessories, its been in place for almost 20 years and I've not altered anything.  The same engine and passenger cars have been on the track for over five years.

Is there some thing else I can check?

Thanks in advance.

Bill,

Some question:

  • What release of DCS are you using?
  • Do you have more than 1 TIU and, if so, is the bad track on one TIU and the good Track on the other TIU?
  • If you have more than 1 TIU, are you operating in Super TIU mode?
  • When you put an engine on the problem track and turn on power, does it get power?
  • Does it stay dark and silent or does it come up in conventional mode, with lights and sounds?
Thanks Barry answers below.

Ben,

Did you inadvertently turn DCS off on that output?

If he had turned off the DCS signal on that channel, the engine would not have seen a watchdog signal and would have come up with lights and sounds.

However, it occurs to me that it could be a loose or poorly soldered tether connection that could cause the problem, if the pickup rollers are on the engine and the PS2 board is in the tender.
