Any small gauge cable will work. I use the cat5e cable because it easy to get my hands on it. trouble with that is it will break off, so you have to be careful.

The old school phone cable isn't really easy to get at the home stores today.

This cable at Lowes looks good and has a black sheath.

Southwire 18-AWG 4-Conductor Jacketed Sprinkler Wire (By-the-Foot). Has a white instead of yellow

The other class of cable that's seems to be available is called 4 conductor security cable.

Hit the home store electrical section and ask what they have in 4 conductor cable by the foot. Solid is easier than stranded for the switches.

Stranded is probably better since it doesn't break if you nick it when stripping. And when you bear down on it in a euro connector strip for example. Just twist the strands together and aim when you slide it into the switch. I did all on mine on the bench with a standard length and took it under the table to a euro strip and then from there to my control area. Very flexible now for changes if any including the addition of the STM2.

I used 4-wire solid phone cable, same colour as Lionel fastrack switch, so wire connections are easy to get right.

I had to buy 1000 ft at an electrical supply store, for $75, which is about the same as 500 ft thru the internet, once shipping is factored in. This wire can also be used for wiring buildings and accessories.
