Frisco steam

I've freelanced a Frisco switcher...

Growing up in Kansas City in the '60's there are many great railroads to train watch.  FRISCO was a favorite of mine, and now a little more is being made.

Lionel. 682268 Legacy 10 wheeler is out there at dealers.  EBay has a few listed also.

In your topic starter I am guessing that your are referencing the MTH 4-8-4's done with a Will Rogers tender and one with a Meteor color scheme.  They are nice looking locomotives but not accurate.

With only a quick search, here is what I see available in O gauge:

6-38043 FRISCO SCALE TMCC 4-6-0 TEN-WHEELER #719 - Lionel

None of these locos L's or M's - model Frisco prototypes. The Lionel 4-6-0 is NYC, and the Lionel Frisco 2-8-2 is a model of the Southern 4501 Mikado. The MTH Will Rogers is an ATSF 4-8-4 with a non-ATSF tender, is it not? A fairly good stand-in. 

To my knowledge and recollection, no 3RO steam loco has ever modeled a SLSF steamer. This is odd, in a way, because the Frisco gave away several 4-8-2's.

To wit, the 1527 in Mobile, right after it was put in Municipal Park (with a temporary spur off the GM&O); I took this with the family Kodak box camera when I was 14 or so, around 1962. So, why don't we have one of these in 3RO? They're all over, plus other SLSF locos (a Frisco Mikado in Birmingham, plus one in Pensacola).

The 1630 class decapods, 1500 class mountains or 4500 class northerns would a great place to start. Scott Mann looked into the Firefly, but it didn't generate enough interest. Probably the same for the rest unfortunately....

In my case, Frisco never fielded 0-8-0 switchers, so my number is a) speculative and b) a tribute to the late, great Jack Benny... ;-)

As a side note, the Lionel 1666, profilewise, is not a bad match for the 4xxx series Mikes, if you ignore the fact they're missing a set of drivers.  In fact,  I'm mulling over renumbering my 1666 to match the 4003 at the Fort Smith Trolley Museum.

The 4100s are 2-8-2s built as close cousins to the 1500s.  Frisco 4-8-4s are 4500-class; the homebuilt 4-8-2s are 4300s and 4400s.  The 2-10-0s are 1600 class.

Alas, the Ten-wheelers (I have one and run it often) are NYC prototypes and really too big for any 4-6-0 that ever wore a coonskin.

Lionel's 4100 is really a Southern Mike, and Lionel's 4126 is an USRA Mike--closer but not really Frisco.  The 4000s were USRA Light Mikes.

One neat prototype would be one of the handful of 4-4-0s that the road modernized late in the steam era.  It could be done in scale for small layouts.

I would dearly love a 1500!

1030 class Decapods?  1030 was a Pacific part of 1015-1039 built by Baldwin in 1910.

The only Decapods the Frisco had were the Russian's 1613-1632.

MTH has the tooling, they need to make one.

The All Nation/General Models Mountain was available in 3-rail, and was close to Frisco.  It is not exact, but it matches some ancient RMC drawings.

Thanks guys. I remember my Grand Mother telling me, she had seen the first or one of the first 2-10-0's when she was a young lady. I believe she said that they had derailed the loco. Anyways Im not a rivet counter but it sure would be nice for some more Frisco. Oh well guess if your not big enough no one notices you. LOL. Hey Mitch whens the next meeting for the rail club, was that in Bentonville. Please let me know. Maybe I can attend. I believe there was a man from around Prairie Grove or out that way. He got in touch with me a couple years back, we were going to meet up, but before we did ha had a heart attack and was laid up in the hospital, and I was also sick at that time. Cant remember names. Maybe you know him, maybe it was you. Hope to meet with you fellas  soon.

Yes,  the FireFly would be a cool stream liner. Oh and my Grand Pa was a fireman for the Missouri Pacific, he fired from Glenena Mo. To LeadHill, Ar. Or abouts there.

yes, it must have been. We had talked on the phone,  about a visit, but my schedule didn't work out at the time. I was also getting over health problems at the time. Much better now and much more able to get around. Hope to see you too. Marked the dates on my calendar, so I can be there.

Prairie Grove...Oh!  I know;  that woulda been Keith Johnson, the club president.  He was laid up with heart problems at the same time I was; in fact, his room was a couple floors below mine.  Anyhow, he's also in much better health.   Looking forward to meeting you!
