What kind of batteries work best in the DCS handheld.
running harbor freight nickel-cadmium and they run down to often.

I'm still using plain old Duracell alkaline in remote, but have recently been getting Eneloop (sp) for our cameras and they seem to be pretty good. May try them in remotes soon. Got Eneloop's (sp again) at Costco. Have used Thomas Distributing in the past and personally have had good luck with their stuff. They also have some nice chargers and other stuff to go with the batteries. Reasonable pricing.
Don't forget to take one battery out of remote when not in use.

Why do that? What does it accomplish?
It's not a good idea to exercise the door on the battery compartment any more than necessary.

I was told by a DCS repairman the batteries would last longer and it seems to work. Did they change the remote?

How much longer do they actually last and how did you measure the difference?

The only change over the life of the remote, of which I'm aware, is that the "knurls" on the thumbwheel became more pronounced several years ago.

I don't know how you would measure that, Maybe it seems to work for me because I don't run my trains much, very seldom operate in good weather months. I always use the same brand battery with the latest expiration date.

Using the backlight for the DCS screen will lower battery life considerably. I never use it.
