I seem to keep bumping into Rock Island 1/1 scale artifacts this summer.  First was the poor old wooden caboose in Old Colorado City, CO.  Then I discovered a restored version of the same caboose in West Liberty, IA along with a beautiful RI station on the former mainline about an hour west of their namesake town.   The station was built in 1897 when the town only had 1,690 residents.  It was ,however, the junction of the Rock Island and the B,C.R. & N RR (Burlington, Cedar Rapids & Northern) so perhaps the Rock was expecting big things.  The B,CR & N's ROW is now a grassy remnant and the Rock's line is now the Iowa Interstate RR, but the restored station remains.  Who knows what the Rock had in mind in 1897, orIMG_2890IMG_3003IMG_3001IMG_2999IMG_3002IMG_2998 maybe that's just the way the Rock rolled ?          Rich in SD, but roaming the Midwest.
