While I enjoy all types of trains and started out with a RTR Set from Lionel. I became fascinated with the subway sets by MTH.

Hi FEC. I have 15 subway sets with add-ons for each. These represent all that I fondly remember riding as well as those that I enjoyed seeing at the Transit museum. Although subways are the cornerstone of my collection, I also dabble in LIRR and military rail items. In fact, I've been having a blast building tanks, trucks and other loads for repainted military flat cars. I just need to build that second layout for a military/Long island rural themed layout in one of my empty nest kid's rooms and I'm all set, LOL!.
Nice! I'm like you I'm also heavy in to the military loads. Its hard to find 1/43 US models WW2 era. I think 1/35 is too big.
I own 5 MTH CTA Subway sets. I love them all. I would like to see a future company pick up where MTH left off.
CTA - Blue Logo + Add on
CTA - Bicentennial + Add on
CTA - Chicago Bears
CTA - Chicago White Sox
CTA - Yellow Book
I have been on the lookout for the CTA Green/Creme, probably the only set on my radar.
they are very rare and expensive. I had 3 sets and sold two of them awhile back. If one could be found, how much would someone have to pay for that 2-car set ?
Just one.
The Original Proto 1 NYC Subway D Train, with BCR installed. Two extra car set too.
This is the only MTH set I own, purchased it when it first came out

I am, although I have small lead on one right now, but it's not 100% for sure. Either one as long as it's PS2 or PS3.

I've been stocking up on Tamiya, Hobby boss and now Atlantis for my 1/48 WW2/Korea era loads. I just bought a few Howitzer guns and an army fuel truck from Atlantis. All are in 1/48 and will make great loads. Check them out. I've also purchased a few of the Hobbyboss and Atlantis 1:48 Military kits at Hobby Lobby on Pines Blvd.
You can also order direct from Atlantis for decent prices -

Paint these olive drab and stick on some army stickers and you’re good to go -
been searching for my first one since january! almost had a 1970s one from the forum today, but was a little too late!
8 MTH 6 car trains plus extra cars for a mix. Will be parting out red 12's, silver 42's & 17's in the near future to make room on the shelves for the next sets.
Not counting the R40 2-Car Add-on, I have three full R21 4-car subway sets, 2 in HO, and now a Redbird in O that I just purchased yesterday at Ready to Roll Trains here in Miami.
It's positioned right next to me at my desk at home along with my other interests where I've working remotely for the past year plus.
I had one of these in the past and sold it - big mistake. I jumped at the opportunity when I saw one come up.
P.S. - Yes #Strap Hanger and #bluelinec4, whom I've been conversing with offline on another topic, with this purchase of the Redbird it looks like I've changed my mind in a big way

Nice pickup, Kevin! The R-21s were my first MTH subway purchase because they reminded me of the R-33 Redbirds I’d been riding into Manhattan from Queens back in the late 80s/early 90s. I was going to change all the signage to #7 line, but I’m glad I didn’t (particularly since mth eventually came out with a #7 redbird).
So now you’re back on the Ogauge wagon? You better start building quick before you change your mind once again, LOL!
I have 2 complete sets of the MTH #6200 CTA 4-Car & 2-Car Subway Sets....with the Green Roofs ..plus a set of the #6200 CTA with the very rare Cream Roof Set. When I was a kid when I lived on the South Side of Chicago, I use to ride the Douglas Park Line from one end of the line to the other. That was fun...back than.
Daaaaaaa.... Bearzssssss..... I have a 4 car set of the Bears and gave up getting the 2 car add-on, so added a 2 car CTA silver set. Mixing them together, I think, looks cool. Saw it running that way at a Chicagoland Hobby. Would love to see MTH run more CTA sets of all.
wow beautiful sets everyone. Trainnerd has some sets I never knew existed..I got in to the O guage late and missed out. Hopefully MTH does re-issue some of those sets.
Kevin, nice set. I'm glad Bill and Vinny at Ready2Roll are open again, love that place.

Yup, they opened the showroom to the public a couple weeks back. Bill's sold a bunch of subway sets recently from an estate sale I think. I wasn't paying attention to eBay so I missed most of them. Caught this one though.

I love the CTA trains also, especially these two. In my 70's frame of mind, whenever I see the Green & Tan L trains, the opening themes from both the "The Bob Newhart Show" and "Good Times" come front and center. Newhart taking a walking tour of Downtown Chicago to take the L home, which I later learned that his meandering walking route made no sense at all in order for him to take the train to his northern suburban apartment. Nowadays I get my CTA L fix watching episodes of Chicago P.D., where they appear multiple times on screen. But I digress...
Four in storage: A train, 2500s, LoVs and Redbirds.

You can find a lot of them. It comes down to how much you’re willing to pay and patience. I just started this hobby in February.

🤣🤣🤣🤣Thank you. My gf has already accepted that if we live together, there will be a train room!
I bought mine as they came out over the years, with the intent to assemble ten-car trains of each, with a few exceptions. At the moment I have:
- R-42: 2 sets + 1 add-on
- R-17: 2 sets + 1 add-on (silver/blue)
- R-21: 2 sets + 1 add-on (Redbird scheme)
- R-32: 2 sets + 1 add-on (add-on assembled from parts, both cars have the same number)
- R-36: 2 sets + 1 add-on + 2 on flatcars + 1 R33S (World's Fair)
- R-40: 2 sets + 1 add-on
- R-62: 2 sets + 1 add-on
- R-142: 2 (five-car) sets
- Lo-V: 1 set (emulates operational museum consist)
- R-1: 1 set + 1 add-on (emulates operational museum consist minus R-10 prototype)
- CTA 3200 series: 2 sets
- MOW "rider cars": 4
- MOW diesels: 2 RMT Bangs
- Ballast hoppers: 4 (Nassau Hobbies special run)
It seems I have quite a subway fleet...

(edited 9/3 to update r142's as twin 5-car sets)

A friend of mine, one who did most of the subway announcements (RIP) had in his photo collection, a shot of a CTA car in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, with Manhattan in the background. I think it was among a number being rebuilt by a contractor there. Pretty sure it wasn't a 3200 series though.
I wasn't terribly discriminatory when it came to subways. I was seriously thinking of adding the PCC-style CTA cars in the bicentennial scheme, but procrastinated and failed to pull the trigger in time.

if anyone is looking for the CTA..Yellow Book 3200 Series...4-Car and 2-Car Sets..Sidetrack Hobbies...shows that he has them in stock
I just have the original R21 red/silver roof and mta logo. Also I aquired the 2 car add on. I missed the R40 slants.
I have posted this before.
Who will pick up the production of subway sets now that MTH no longer produces them?
There is certainly a market for them yet they seem forgotten with the change.

I recently fished a single red R-17 out of the 'bay for a ridiculously low price as it was listed as a "red passenger car".

Love my R-1s as well. However, I noticed some of the decking in front of certain doors had fallen off and needed to be glued back on. I was lucky to find the pieces in between my tracks. I love mixing consists with the blue door R-34s and the R-32s. The R-32s are great as well if you just keep the doors shut and never need to remove the engine shell for service. Otherwise, what a pain for such a beautiful set. Good luck with the new R-40s. I used SIRTs fix for my original R-40 roof grills and it looks great and has held up well. The interiors with the metal hand straps make this a top 5 set for me.

Check with Ready to Roll in Miami. I believe they have one
Just the Lionel R-27 (but two copies of it to have a spare). If Lionel came out with updated door-opening versions I'd be a willing customer.

Don't give up looking. I found the second one on Ebay: someone was liquidating a collector's stash; this set was in the box, never opened. The owner had bought it and put it on the shelf. The seller was asking almost half the original list price. I jumped at the chance. There are more like that out there.

Hello "Regular" W S Joe !
Well, I am the "F" Joe (Joe F) -- another Joe, heh.
Well, I guess fartbook bounced you due to suspecting your having a false profile-identity - and wanted your ID documents info to prove it was a real person. Same with me - Mine was set using a totally fabricated profile name and stats up by a pal and was not done by me - I didn't want to join but he insisted. Well, for nearly 3 years it worked OK for me -- I met a number of people who already knew me for years, decades, and a few new ones. I posted tons of very historical info and photos, memories, facts, details, transit modeling info, etc., ALL GONE NOW -- vaporized by FB ! A loss to them and their FB viewers.
But I hardly miss FB at all - and all the FB nonsense, (suspensions -- FB jail, posts removed -- FB warnings & threats over nothing -- and the frequently "lost" postings --they just disappeared for no reason. I found a great replacement for FB founded by a person who wanted to make his new social media creation a 180 degrees turnaround from what is FB -- and millions of FB used have join it already. In July 2.5 million joined. Its called mewe.com. Check it out !
Regards - Joe F
Mewe is tempting, but I'm not ready for another social media platform. I'll stick to newspapers, books, magazines and websites dedicated to specific endeavors like OGR Forums. My apologies to all for derailing this thread.
Hi Joe
It amazes me what goes on with FB. I admit I use it and found some of it redeeming, like connecting with high school friends, classic TV , and yes some train related groups, i.e Brian's O scale NY group. Other than that, reading about what people did today and over nonsense like that is useless.
Anyway glad you will remain here and post pictures. Your work as Joe F stated, is top shelf modeling.
TY
Steve
I sure wish some of you folks with subway-theme layouts would consider doing articles for the magazine. I have featured subways in the past that are usually (but not always) part of "regular" O gauge layouts, but would sure like to see more with subways as the central theme.

Allan, what are the requirements for submitting an article to your magazine with respect to text, photos, length and content?
Just one.
You can read about my subway here: www.warrenvillerailroad.com
My one subway set does get a workout, as it's the only train on my layout! 😊
Good point Allan an article on a Subway layout or section of a layout in OGR Magazine would be great. Lets see something.

Thank you Joe, I have no outside windows at the location of my layout in the basement. I do use two LED lighting kits on tripods with an orange filter to give it that dawn / dusk glow to it.
Hello Matt !
Thanks for that very interesting and informative lighting information ! My train room (basement but about only 1/3 below ground outside) has two closed (front wall and rear wall) semi-sealed up windows so I have no source of daylight except when I open the front door to the strong east sun in the morning ! It only hits a small portion of the front of the layout ! I use a 150 Watt CLEAR bulb ( real incandescent ) -- with all room lighting (florescent tube 4 foot fixtures) off -- and here are some of my late afternoon effects -

NO - somewhere in NY City along an El line in the 1960's - 70's period -- but I see a New Jersey Public Service Coordinated Transit GMC Bus at right - could be in upper Bronx after coming east off of the nearby George Washington Bridge on a route from New Jersey (Fort Lee, etc) -- perhaps seen under the IRT Broadway-Van Cort. Park EL line to W.242nd St Terminal (todays # 1 & 3 train)

The Subway Car at the left side of the station is my model (one of 2 I built) of an IRT 1939-40 NY Worlds Fair class Steinway Low-V. There were only 50 cars built (25 pairs) for the Fair as the IRT Company's newest (and final) rolling stock of 1939. They had a Motorman cab at one end and a blind end (no controls nor cab) at the other end -- where the door control boxes were located on the outside of the end walls. They could run as SINGLE cars alone (for yard moves, or whatever) but had to be coupled to another Steinway car so it could operate in the direction of its blind end.
The usual consist for the 2 car units of 1939-40 Worlds Fair pair of cars were:
[ CAB END - BLIND END ] + [ BLIND END - CAB END ]
--- and if a solo WF car was run without its opposite mate attached, it was run coupled in a train, with an older (1915 era) standard body Steinway Low-V (looked just like other Low-V Cars with the usual enclosed vestibule at each end) as :
[ CAB END - BLIND END ] + [ CAB END - CAB END ]
My Cars have full interior details - proper seats, ceiling fans, above window car car ads, and the inner bulkhead at the cab end of the car - see 2 interior photos below; (this was best quality available when I took them 25 years ago)
BELOW - view from Motorman CAB (see at left foreground side and inner bulkhead wall at right) end of the car. There is a 2 cushion rattan set under the side window in the small "cubbyhole" type space in front of the bulkhead wall at right. Ceiling vents are seen in ceiling sloping sides.
BELOW -- View at Blind end of car -- there is no interior bulkhead at this end - as seen at opposite end of UPPER photo)(yeah, I know the female seated figure looks, umm, odd, heh !)

A SUPER fascinating photo: it is at "The Hub", a thriving commercial neighborhood at 149th St and Third Avenue in the South Bronx. There was a station on the El at that location but no longer there in your photo. I'm very surprised and impressed that such an old structure could still support the weight of that locomotive.
And I'm puzzled as to what NJ Public Service buses were doing in NYC that far away from the George Washington Bridge Bus Station (given the apparent existence of what seems like a bus station in the right of the old photo below). I can speculate that NJ Public Service buses had a transfer point to the Third Avenue El and the subways for NJ commuters at the Hub. After the GWB Bus station opened in 1963, all NJ buses coming over the bridge were required to terminate at the new bus station and would no longer traverse NYC streets, so that would put the date of your photo as prior to 1963.
I figured out the location from the name of the neckwear store to the left of the Thom McAn ("The Hub Neckwear Co."). Here's an earlier pic of the same area.
Thanks for sending me on a deep dive into South Bronx transit history! 😁

Hello Joe G
SEE MY OWN JUST ADDED PHOTOS BELOW of this same location
THANKS MUCH -- I spent an hour searching for Howard Clothes Store and Tom Mcan locations on Google but useless...but I recognized the EL structure and had a suspicion it was at 149th & 3rd. You see the odd outer track girders and their connection to cross beams. That was when the El was widened for creating a new 2-platform express station in 1914-15 and the cross girders were extended outboard. New twin track girders were installed on each extended cross girder for a new further outboard located UPTOWN & DOWNTOWN Local Track. The original track girders for the original inboard located 2 local tracks (it was built as a single island platform station in early 1890's) were used to support the two new island platforms for the new express station.
Anyway, I actually have that same photo (and about 100 others in the 149th St Station area circa 1905 thru 1973) in my collection -- I should have followed my own hunch-suspicion, and first LOOKED at my 3rd Ave EL E. 149th St Station photos-album (I have an album of photos for EACH station on that EL - South Ferry, City Hall up to to Gun Hill Rd) and I would have saved a lot of time. Yeah, I don't know WHY those NJ buses are there unless it was a private charter shopping trip or something to do with going to the Bronx Park Zoo, an outing, etc.
NO - that is not a bus station (white structure). It actually houses the stairs and escalator from the below IRT Subway station to the above 3rd Ave EL Station. Willis Avenue is in (and ends at) lower foreground and the Willis Ave. trolley tracks swing to merge with those under the 3rd Ave El. This is a circa 1949-1950's photo -- Bronx streetcars ended in 1950 and overhead wire removed by 1951.

My R1 set
You found two of the most sort after premier subway sets. R-142 and R-62 being RailKing. Nice add
I only have 2 R32 sets now. I used to have the R40 slant set and the R26 redbird set but I sold them both.
My R32 sets are:
The DAP R32 set
The R32 CC set with proto 3 which needs the purple wire soldered back on the the DCS/DCC switch. For some reason MTH didn't do a good job with that but the train runs fine in conventional
Dap R32 set, R40 B train, R1, R26 Redbirds, R21 Redbirds, R17 graffiti, R17 reds, R26 green 2pk, green Lo-v’s, green Q-type El’s, R12 grey, R12 white, R12 red. All of the R36 worlds fair cars plus 2 R33 singles. So like 14 sets plus add ons for all except the R12 red shuttle which was a 4 car train in real life. Here’s some photos after weathering & adding hand cut windows. I like subways! 😃

Nice, I have always (since I first saw one, anyway) liked the McGinnis scheme. Was the K-Line NH EP-5 that we talked about this one:
As you can see, it has been two-railed:

Hello Again Dave (K) ------
YES -- that is the same EP5 New Haven Electric Loco (K Line) and Maginnis Paint Scheme that - heh - "you know who" has just won from Stoudt Auction and a good price in mint condition from the photos I saw from the auction of the loco for sale. Now I have O Scale passenger cars to match his Maginnis Paint Scheme EP 5 Loco -- or my own Maginnis Paint Scheme F Unit Diesel and (see below) my Box Cab Electric NHRR Locos. Regards - Joe F
the statement that MTH will no longer produce them is NOT true. I talked to a very close friend to Mike Wolf today and he stated that MTH still has the tooling for the subways set....both Railking & Premier. He said that Mike told him that MTH will be coming out with a new run of both of them....Railking & Premier. They will be a small run of them. He didn't say which ones ...which road name, but it will be sometime after the holidays. So if anyone is interested in more subway sets...keep an eye or ear out for the announcement.
I have the Marx CTA 10377 set & I'm wondering if anyone could help find the instructions for this set. I has Marx limited "Lectra-Sounds" featuring (8) different station-stop calls.
I HAVE THESE ALL THE NYC SUB SETS,EXCEPT THE LOVEES,AND THE R12 SILVER AND R21 WORK SET.AND I ALSO HEARD MTH DONT MAKE THE SUBWAY SETS ANY MORE,IS MTH OUT OF BIZ????? OR IS MIKE JUST NOT MAKING ANY MORE SUB SETS.CAN ANYONE ELABORATE ON THIS???? THANX IN ADVANCE...CHEERS

I now have two 4-car sets of CTAs and one 6-car set, most of which have been purchased on the secondary market -- no easy task. I haven't had the patience to wait to MTH to reissue. Perhaps working with the Chicago government is no easy task or maybe New York subways are just the highest priority because of volume for MTH. At any rate, I'd be a happy camper if I could land two 2-car CTA sets to complete my collection.
I have the R21 with the MTA Logo and its 2 pack and recently, the R40 Q train plus 2 pack that OGR forumite Bluelinec4 is running [til dec]!
