Hi All;

I know this engine and #3759 have been covered before.

Just recieved mine from Trackside Hobbies, and it is great. I just had to post my comments about it.

It runs well, smokes great, sounds great, and everything works perfectly right out of the box.

Lionel did it right with these engines. Full marks.

Those of you who already have one know what I mean.

Just as an aside; it is rated for 054 curves, but it will make it on 042 as well.

And it is 4 chuffs per rev, just like it ought to be.

For the discounted price you just can't go wrong.

Congrats on the new locomotive!!!  At the discounted price, it's one of the great buys out there.  Just about all the major dealers have priced this steamer in the blow-out zone at one time or another.   With a little luck on timing, both #3751 and #3759 could be had for double-heading at just a shade over the original MSRP of one these jewels.  Simply FABULOUS!!! 

 

Should make us all think twice about dashing out to pre-order any of the big locomotives from the new catalog, unless of course one feels it's an absolute "must have".  Having said that though, I'm sure Lionel is trying like the dickens to avoid another round of blow-outs to the tune of what we've seen from the 2011/2012 catalogs.

 

Next up on the blow-out list... or at least marked down "on sale"???  The Shays and Berkshires.  There are WAY too many of those still in the market, and they've been sitting in inventory far too long -- especially the Shays.   Alas, no whistle-steam on those... but the Shays always make for interesting sites and sounds, and the Berkshires have a nice amount of separately applied detail on them.  Stay tuned, and keep an eye out for your favorite dealer.

I love both of mine. This Legacy Northern is just about perfect for my layout: a really great product that runs and sounds good, and a very detailed, handsome model that looks good, and is big enough to be impressive, but does not hang over the rails on curves too much. One of the two I have, at the least, is always on my layout.

 

I paid list for both of mine, and my Berk: I don't mind paying list for locos I really like - my logic is that if enough people don't, Lionel will probably stop making these types of locos.  I got the Shay at blow out price though - but I still not sure  it was worth it.  Maybe my least favorite loco.

Thanks for the information with respect to O42 track.  If that's the case -- and I have no reason to doubt you -- I may pick one of these up.

Actually. if you look around those Berks are currently discounted. I picked one up last month at a great price.

This beauty is a sleeper. It has more add on details then a VL engine.

Funny thing, I had been looking ages for a super detailed early 20th century steamer and when I first stumbled on to this guy last year. I walked away because I gave its high cost and missing whistle smoke a big thumbs down.  But with so much add on piping and details, appearance easily made up for it. 

Only had to wait for a discount and jump in...

The big bonus... It runs and sounds as good as it look.

I also have that SF Northern. Like everyone here says, it too is a beautiful piece.

I ordered the 4199 (Santa Fe) Berk when they were announced and so paid list price, but don't regret it.  It is scale length and pretty much matches the prototype - at least in the larger details, except, as delivered, the cab was not scale height but I cut off the top and made a new one adding a scale 11" and it now looks just like the photos I have of the 419X SF Berks.  The great amount of added on detail is fantastic.

I learned the hard way when I ran 2 of my engines on 042 rather than the recommended 054 curves.  Both of them appeared to run ok on 042, but it added too much stress on the drawbars on both of them. I was told that my S-3 could run on 042 but my drawbar ended up getting bent.  On my MTH engine the added stress on the wireless drawbar caused the engine to malfunction.  I ended up replacing all my 042 curves with 054.   With ATSF Northern, I don't know, but it may run fine with the tighter curves but over time there might be stress added to the engine which could cause possible problems.

Well, after thinking about it for most of the month, I went ahead and ordered a Legacy 3751 from Nicholas Smith today.

 

Their May sale ends today.  There appear to be two more 3751s left and I believe three 3759s still available.  The Legacy Mallets are still available in case any one is interested.

 

I'm already chomping at the bit to get this engine up and running.  It will be my first steam engine with Whistle Steam.

Pardon my ignorance but is Alex M the same entity as Electric Railroad?  If not, would you mind passing some details/info on to me?  Do you mind if I ask how much you paid for the 4 chuff/beter smoke upgrade?
 
I would very much like to upgrade to 4 chuffs and better smoke on my Lionel NKP 779 (38050).  It's a terrific locomotive but the smoke output stinks.
 
Once you get used to 4 chuffs per revolution, it's hard to go back to 2.

I had mine upgraded to 4 chuffs and a smoke upgrade by Alex M. It really sounds and smokes great.
