With an ASC2 in switch mode, you can use a Legacy setup to control any traditional Lionel remote switch.

Note: In addition to the #990 base and Cab2, you will need the LCS DB9 Cable with Power Supply in addition to the ASC2. Depending upon the total number of switches, you may need additional PDI cables and ASC2 devices.

You can use the Lionel 6-22980 SC2 to control six switches, you don't need to go to the LCS linkup unless you're going to go down the LCS route.  You don't need to add anything else except wire to the SC-2 for the switch control.  Also, the ASC2 only handles four switches and costs as much or more than the SC2.
